Thanks @davem1111!  There will be a Honda or clone of some sort on it, I have a couple 6.5 hp options to choose from.  I believe the truck axle has a 3.73:1 ratio ring and pinion in it.  I was going to use a go-kart clutch and a couple sprockets for power transmission, but realized I have enough :wh: stuff I could reduce the speed even more by adding the transmission.  I then thought to use the brake shaft to drive it, but decided again to use a hub to drive a pulley.  Locking the other axle/hub down to prevent it spinning might work the differential harder than normal and double the left side hub’s output speed, but at the end of the day this transmission will likely see much less work in this than machine anywhere else on the farm.

Very cool. Yeah, I'm guessing that most of the time you'll only be moving it a short distance every few days or so.  So you use the hand winch to raise the frame off the ground before moving it?  Seems like hydraulics might be a handy way to do that but I guess that's overkill. Wish we'd had something like this when we had chickens. The most we had was about 16 birds so a much smaller one would have done the trick. Could have put a hitch on the front of a WH and used the PTO to lift it, or the winch I made a mule-mount for... it's fun thinking up new ideas. :greetings-clappingyellow:

Just the length of the structure each day, if possible, is all it will need to move.  I thought of hydraulics, but then I remembered I had this super heavy winch and even it is overkill.

An extra jack shaft to lock the axles maybe? :twocents-02cents:

Not sure what you got for sprockets or chain hanging around. Probably $150-175 to buy new parts and a little more fab work.

At that point, I would imagine I could get by just fine by running off the brake shaft and doing external gear reduction with drive pulleys as needed.  I did think of @meadowfield’s external locker he was building not long ago but as usual, I’m trying to get by with as much of what I got as possible :handgestures-thumbupright:

That

Is

Cool

Only two questions:

When the Big Show has "Customs" as the feature will this fit on Norman?

Will the chickens make the trip?

This feels eerily familiar, after shopping for belts so many times for the Snowmowtractor…

there is a new O’reilly Auto Parts in town.  I explained to the fella what I was building and he walked me to the belt rack and said to have fun.  Awesome!

A 7495 Automotive V belt, some small block Chevy drive pulleys, a Wheel Horse 8411 NOS belt, Honda GX160 off a junk pressure washer, and some funky Briggs two piece engine pulley with a retainer collar, and an old cast mule drive idler and a late 70’s or early 80’s 3/4 ton Chevy front axle we have a running power drive system!

It’s not actually a chicken tractor.  It’s a ‘78 Wheel Horse model C-101 8 speed.  The hood says so.

Oh. My.

It’s pretty fast!  Maybe it needs an 8 speed!  A second belt from the :wh: trans to the truck pinion made the grip a huge improvement.  The belt needs more guard / guides.  It is the most funky feeling rocking on a leaf sprung sideways axle zooming a 30’ structure sideways!  Somehow the black hood plastic fender got a big crack in it and some duct tape, so @SylvanLakeWH sorry to say it wasn’t sacred here!  It got trimmed and mounted.

I need steering, and I need it fast!  I’m really looking forward to taking my chickens for a ride!

I think I’m turning in the right direction…. This manual rack should do the trick!

The rack is mounted.  Now I need to snake a drag link through the well planned frame work and try it out!

Funny story.

The steering is backwards!  It’s like a dirt car.  As Doc would say on Cars, in order to turn left, some times you might find yourself turning right.
