Magnum M14 - Replacement Muffler

I got one of these to replace the broken muffler on a Magnum M14. Tried installing tonight, but the exhaust opening is the same size as the muffler opening. 

This might be a dumb question, but am I supposed to bend out the opening of the muffler a little so it will fit onto the engine exhaust or do I need do something else?

That looks like a Cub Cadet muffler.  I don't have any experience with them, you may need a Cub exhaust nipple to fit properly.  Or maybe you can bump it out a bit with a pipe expander.  What'cha gonna do with the outlet then?  It's gonna blast right onto your right leg unless you add a bend or deflector.  Someone familiar with Cadets chime in here?  I'm sort of guessing, but it doesn't look like the usual WH part.

So this is one that was suggested to me in the past as a replacement. 

Is there some kind of replacement muffler you know of that I can get instead?

I have that same Cub muffler on a couple K series fit right over the unthreaded end of the exhaust nipple.

Well that's interesting...
I am going to take some pics later today. But they are definitely the same size. I did tried bending it out a little last night with what I had, but still wouldn't go on. So instead of continuing to mess up the muffler, I came here to ask instead.

The slip-over inlet on the muffler for my C81 has a pair of 1/8" wide thru cuts about 1 " deep on opposite sides - seen that type of connection on auto exhaust before. Uses a small - 1-3/8" muffler clamp - easy on, easy to remove for service. You MAY want to try that.....

So if I understand correctly, that's exactly like mine. Yet, I can't get it to fit.

I must be doing something wrong or ignorant. Probably just ignorant. I'm not afraid to admit it either. Hah. 

Maybe I just need to try bending it more. I have the muffler clamp.

How much rust buildup on the short 1" pipe on the engine?? Can you measure both with a caliper (not a tape measure) to get an idea of the interference??

As Rick mentioned - you may need to remove the pipe and use one for a Cub IF those have a smaller OD to fit your muffler....

Does you engine  block have a 1" pipe stub coming out of it for the exhaust?

If so, you could use a hand grinder and put a bit of taper on the exhaust nipple.

I checked and there are lots of 1-1/8" pipe expanders for sale. 

I think I'm going to pick one of these up next time they have a 20-30% off sale!

1" black pipe has and OD of 1.301  which is just smaller that 1-5/16  ( 1.312 )

I see what you did with the down front angle.  I'm guessing the OP might have a 300 series with the Magnum engine, and don't know if you can do that with the wider hood.

Yeah that doesn't look big enough.  So, the OEM 112213 was superseded by 94-3739 when Toro added a heat shield, and the new part will fit with or without the shield.  You can break or grind off the shield mount tabs if their appearance offends you.  I think it's still available.  Or were you just looking for something cheaper?

Yeah, the original one would be nice, but not $350 nice.

Really just need something that would fit and work at this point. Muffler is the only thing holding me up from firing it up.

Magnums used an expensive exhaust nipple.  You could pull it off and sell it, then use some Black Iron pipe and a 45 degree elbow.  i am not a home now but this weekend I can take a couple pictures of my Magnum with just plain pipe fittings.

Yeah, the cast "S" pipe.  A couple standard nipples and a 45 might actually fit the Cadet muffler.  Or you could come straight out and put a salt shaker or tubular muffler on it.

I'm thinking of just going the straight pipe and salt shaker or tubular muffler for simplicity sake. I don't like the looks (or sound) of them, but I'm ready to get this one back in service. 

Is it a 1 and 3/8" threaded pipe?

One way to do it  I tried to use stuff I had.  This is an M16 the exhaust port is larger (1-1/4) You should be able to use a 1' 45 street L and a nipple...

They are OK  The Cub may. be a bit quieter.  Here is a cub muffler using just an 45 elbow.  again this is a 16 K341 and the exhaust port is 1-1/4  your should be 1"  so no reduction bushing needed.
