Horseoholic 169 #1 Posted March 27, 2023 Hey folks , Had a little issue yesterday with my 856 after doing some re-wiring to correct the PO's incorrect wire routing , I used the factory schematic and re-wired it to the schematic as I have done before and when I turned the ignition key to Run position the wire on the starter generator light ( the wire that's soldered to the side of the bulb holder ) instantly burned up ! I've been scratching my head over this and can't figure out what the issue could be. According to the schematic , the center wire goes to the "start" terminal of the starter switch and the soldered wire on the side of the bulb holder goes to the "Ignition" terminal of the Ignition switch which is how I put it, so could there be an issue with the Ign. switch or in the bulb holder itself ? There shouldn't have been a wire soldered to the socket. This is a correct replacement socket for this application. Horseoholic 169 #3 Posted March 27, 2023 This here is the same light I have on my 856 & 1057 OEM Wheel Horse NOS 5423 generator light / lamp works | eBay You can see the one wire that's soldered to the side of the holder.
953 nut 55,210 #4 Posted March 27, 2023 (edited) Feel free to use any type light socket you choose but if a wire is soldered to the light socket and the light socket is grounded to the dash and you apply 12 volts to the other end of the wire it is going to be a short circuit and will fry the wire. Cole Hersee 5423 is also a two lead UNGROUNDED pilot lamp. any questions. If you feel better about paying $ 90.00 to somebody on rather than buying the socket at Advance-auto for $ 13 that is your choice. https://www.elecdirect.com/cole-hersee-switches/cole-hersee-warning-devices-pilot-lights-panel-lamps-sockets/double-contact-plated-brass-bezel-15-16-faceted-lens-amber-12v-bulb-supplied?geoip=us Edited March 27, 2023 by 953 nut 5

Looks to me that one wire is insulated from the holder and makes contact in the middle with the tip of the bulb base - the other is soldered to the bulb base, not the holder.... time for a continuity check - i agree with @953 nut Edited March 27, 2023 by ri702bill
squonk 41,094 #6 Posted March 27, 2023 (edited) I agree. I believe that wire is soldered to an insulated portion of the lamp. If you had that e bay lamp in your hand and checked it with a meter you would find the same. I think whatever insulates the actual lamp socket to the fixture broke down and that's why your wire burned up. Look at that diagram. If the wire from the ign was grounded at the light, it would burn up every time when the key was turned on. Edited March 27, 2023 by squonk 2

ri702bill 8,317 #8 Posted March 27, 2023 Seems to work somewhat like an ammeter??? A dim glow when charging, nothing if not charging?? Not used on any of my stuff here - just asking....
squonk 41,094 #9 Posted March 27, 2023 Light goes out when charging. Is bright when just the key on and dims as charging voltage increases. Just like the 60's cars with the GEN light
Horseoholic 169 #10 Posted March 27, 2023 Just asking ..... the cole hersee light installs the same as the original, one wire to ign. and the other to start on the ignition switch? The light I showed from E-Bay is just as a reference to show what I have, definitely not wanting to pay $90.00 for a light.
