Restoring my 604

Recommended Posts

Now is a good time to check for excess play in all the steering components - axle pivot, axle spindle bores, spindles, lower steering support, and tierods. All are repairable except the tierods - a new pair of adjustable ones with Heim Joints on the ends is the hot ticket... Also check the frame for TWO things - stress cracks around the four Unidrive mounting holes and excess play in the clutch cross shaft where it goes thru the frame - no bushings there..... Both are repairable. I have addressed all the above with my 502 build.....

I grew up on a 604. Went thru 4 Teckys in 13 years. Did a lot of mowing and snowplowing.

Luv the rear weights! :occasion-xmas:

Reminds me of the early Chevy Vega - once the original engine was replaced, you never put the clips back on the hood hinges, because you just knew you would have to revisit the same thing down the line.... do Tecky's go in with wingnuts??? :omg:

Today I took the dash panel, throttle cable, belt, and the gas tank off of my 604.It is now just a rolling frame with an engine.

My 502 “Putt Putt” has a 604 frame.  The improvement to the steering from ‘62 to ‘64 was great!

@Pullstart The better cambered axle, with separate tierods. Takes the turning radius down from that of your Schoolbus to that of the Pickup....

Toss in the adjustable lift stop - perfect for lifting the plowblade just a tad off the ground - winner, winner..:thumbs2:

Exactly what I was thinking.

It's not cheap stuff but it works excellent.

HUGE labor saver.

@ wheel horse - kid , might also think about replacing that  drive belt IDLER PULLEY  , tractor supply has them in stock with a larger bearing , get the size to size bronze bushing for a bolt on fit . if you were to , clean out and re grease that with lucas red grease , probably never touch it again ,lubricate all related linkage , so its smooth / solid , pete

The goal is all the paint not just as much as possible lol. Thanks for the tip on this stuff. It’s all

spray paint from what I can tell. So should be able to get it to come off fairly easy. Famous last words.

Trina's used that in a spray can form.

You'll be SHOCKED how easily the paint comes off unless it's right near a heat source like the exhaust.

Can’t wait for you all to see it when it’s done. He has put tons of time into cleaning parts. Almost to the reassembly part of the project. He’s on a field trip with school til tomorrow so I’ve been in the garage the last 2 nights alone making sure things were squared away so once we have the final pieces ready he can go to town assembling it. I’m going to let him be the one to share pictures.
