Raider/C100?

Recommended Posts

Retired Wrencher

I have an interesting scenario with latest tractor I bought a few weeks ago. I was looking up the model to find what year it was. Going by Sparkys AKA Mikes list and reading the MFG tag 1-0390 this being a raider 10 in 1974 but it has C100 badging.  The 1975 C100 is 1-391. Must of be a leftover Raider frame? Any thoughts.

About the only difference between the 2 are the decals. Since the model changed between 73 and 74 it was probably one of the last units off the line in 73 and they put the 74 C100 decals on it

I thought the last year for the Bronco and Raider or named tractors was was72? Then there was 73 when they just listed the horsepower and transmission for the model. 74 started the letter series tractors. I’m no expert on this, I just wanted to clarify this for myself. Thanks!

I think 73-74 was kind of a no mans land for WH as American Motors bought WH in May of 74

In the USA:

On record for everything I've seen, the last year for a "named" tractor was 1972.

1973 was the HP and transmission as the designation.

1974, all were referred to as a Letter Series.

But..... I'd be zero percent surprised if any dealer anywhere had a leftover 1973 and marketed it as either year.

Europe now.... That's a different story.  There were named tractors later than here.

I picked up a C-160 Automatic that according to the ID tag is a 1971 Bronco 14 :confusion-shrug:

K-341 engine spec is correct for a C-160 but has an electric clutch, flat faced tower like a Bronco without the voltage regulator/rectifier sticking out of it, older Bronco style tunnel cover, but has mid & front Tach-A-Matic & C-series up & down throttle & choke controls & dash. The steering column is shorter too. I still need to look for a tag on the tranny.

I'm thinking Frankenhorse. :scratchead:IMG_0202.JPG.c567606f8ba9efdbace41a1b583353cb.JPGIMG_0201.JPG.f01ced62fd38132f9f7b9d5f4f8826a2.JPG

I have found a few discrepancies through the years with the model number list. This Raider/C-100 thingy might be another one.

:confusion-confused:      You have to keep in mind that the hard and fast rules with Wheel Horse aren't quite so hard and the company broke them fast.        :laughing-rolling:

In 1973 you had the Lawn Ranger 700 and 800;  Commando;   Raider 10 and 12 as well as the GT-14.   In 1974 the Lawn Ranger 700 and 800 and the Raider 10 continued to be in the lineup.       :confusion-shrug:        Were these a matter of using up available parts remaining from the 1972 model run?   Were they sentimental favorites that lingered because the management couldn't stand to see them go away? Or were they continued so we would have a conundrum to amuse ourselves with fifty years later?          :ychain:

The older hydros with hydraulic lift were notorious for breaking the tower on both sides at the mounting tabs where the four bolts go into both sides of the frame behind the footrests. Rather than a true "Frankenhorse", someone probably just swapped the tower out for one that hadn't broke yet.

The one in the pic isn't broken obviously, but if they break it's typically right above those two bolt holes on both sides.

All the parts I can see says it's a C-100.

My C-120  8 speed broke right behind the hood stand on the lift handle side. There was only two bolts holding the section at the gear shifter. There were two other holes with halt of them missing. don't remember if they were missing in the hood stand or the frame.
