Stormin 9,981 #1 Posted March 17, 2023 (edited) Nell, our collie cross kelpie disappeared this afternoon. She'd managed to open the garden gate and went walkabout. We searched all over round the lanes. Checking the fields. Carol and a neighbour even drove down to the marsh. Asked several people we met. No one had seen her. I was beginning to fear she had been dog napped. That's getting a common thing over here. While Carol was down at the marsh I stayed at home just in case Nell returned. 2-3hrs after she disappeared farmer just round the corner brought her home. 10 minutes before she had walked into his yard. So the little devil had not been to far away all the time. Must have heard us calling her but maybe she has selective deafness. Mods to the gate catch will be done tomorrow. Our Lab/Dane mix would go deaf every time we let him out, nose on = ears off.
elcamino/wheelhorse 9,299 #3 Posted March 17, 2023 @Stormin Perhaps she smelt a SQUONK hiding outside the gate and chased him off before he could cause any trouble.

squonk 41,118 #7 Posted March 18, 2023 (edited) We have a large fenced in yard. One side of the fence was "overbuilt " by retired engineer neighbor Ralph. Ralph loves to get the dogs barking especially my coonhound Bella. One morning I got up, fed the dogs and let them out. Took my shower. I'm getting dressed and my wife starts her bath. Bella barks to come in which is unusual because my other dog Bryant is a German Shorthair Pointer /Lab mix who gets cold fast and Bella has some Alaskan Malamute in her. Bella comes in but no Bryant. I'm not dressed yet and look out the window into the yard. I see a board on Ralph's side knocked out and Bryant is gone. I live right next to a busy state highway. I fear the worst. Yell to my wife that Bryant is gone so she starts a full abort on the bath. Get some clothes on go to the other kitchen door on the opposite side of the house from the yard and there he is sitting on the porch waiting to come in. Ralph found me later fixing the fence and he runs out putting screws in each and every board. I used to have a beagle mix that my one neighbor would have to fish out of his swimming pool all the time. Another dog we had would jump into peoples cars if they left a door or window open. he wouldn't get out unless you took him for a ride , bought him a vanilla cone and showed him the cows at the farm down the road!
