1961 Wheel Horse 701 lubrication question

Recommended Posts

Keith Plett

I purchased my first Wheel Horse last fall and did not get a chance to do anything with it due to being in a cast from a couple of leg and foot surgeries. Today I put a new battery in it and it popped right off. I have some 30 wt oil for an oil change for it but do not know how much it will need. Sorry if these questions come off as stupid but as I said, this is my first Wheel Horse and I have very little to no knowledge about these fine little machines. I also would like to know about any other lubrication issues that anyone could possible enlighten a novice on. Thank you in advance for any help or info anyone can provide.

The transmission will use 80-90wt. When you drain it, raise the front of the tractor as high as you safely can. This will get the oil over a hump that is inside the tranny. Fill until level with the fill hole on the lower left side. Just over a qt. Other than that hit all of the grease certs from time to time.

Download your tractors manual on the Red Square Wheel Horse Forum in the Manuals Section.  You will then have lots of accurate information on operation and a complete parts list.

I have attached a list of fluids and capacities list for you to keep as reference.  I put on garage wall as I have several different models.

When you grease the front end, try to jack the tractor up BY THE FRAME to relieve weight from the front axle, spindles and wheel bushings or bearings.  :handgestures-thumbupright:

WHX??

The 3/4" plug on the crank case top. Just in back of the PTO Should have a dip stick on it.

When checking just rest the Plug on top of the case. No need to thread in.

Strait 30 oil is fine.

:text-yeahthat:

It takes pressure off the pivot pin allowing grease to get to pressure points.
