OldWorkHorse 3,045 #1 Posted March 11, 2023 My friend dropped this off to store for a bit at my place. Just wondering if anyone on here knows anything about it or has any info I can pass along. Runs great starts 1st pull and all engages. Rugged as heck. Old Troy built with a tecumseh engine not sure the HP. He said they guy he bought it from said it OG came with a Briggs? Not sure if thats true or not. Any info or feed back be awesome. If nothing else enjoy the photos and the old school nostalgia. They don't make them like they used to. 953 nut 55,212 #7 Posted March 11, 2023 My dad had one like that in the mid to late 1950s. It was used hard and kept about three acres of garden weed free. I was too small to run the tiller but followed behind pulling weeds between the plants. Skwerl58 704 #9 Posted March 12, 2023 It is a Troy Bilt Horse with the 6 hp Tecumseh. They also came with a 7hp Kohler. I have a 1976 like the one pictured except mine has ag tires. They are an excellent piece of equipment and they also have a big following like Wheel Horse tractors. Parts are readily available. pfrederi 17,736 #10 Posted March 12, 2023 (edited) Picture is a TroyBilt Horse not a Pony I have a circa 1970 Troy-Bilt Horse (6hp Techy) my Father bought...we picked it up at the factory in Troy,NY Over the years they came with Clinton, Tecumseh, Kohler and later B&S engines. (The B&S came along when they sold out to MTD and closed the Troy factory). My brother has a slightly newer Horse with Kohler 7 hp. Both are still in use and after 50+ years never had to replace the worm gear in either one. Have had to replace the reverse friction disk and belts.... Before this Horse Father had a TroyBilt from around 1950. Had a front sickle bar used to mow our back field ..I think it was 2 or 3 HP. C-85 681 #12 Posted March 12, 2023 We were a big Ariens dealer and sold a lot of their roto tillers in the 60s through the 80s. The Troy Built tiller was our biggest competitor to the Ariens Rocket tiller. We fixed both brands and one of the things we did to either of them was to replace the carburetors because they stick out and they often hit something and would break off! I know that Ariens offered a guard to prevent this, and probably Troy did too. Both of these tillers were excellent quality, and were similar. The main feature the Ariens had that the Troy didn't have is that on the Ariens the tiller could be disengaged when transporting it. C-85 2 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Rugged, dependable machine... That a horse model. I have an 89 just like it with a Briggs with a couple additions . Mine you can put the tines out of gear and it has a guard around the engine. Don't put the tine depth all the way down in hard ground it will get up and walk on the tines. They will get away from you or drag you with it. In hard ground put it down a couple of notches at a time. The outher one is an Econo Horse similar in size to a Pony.
