Charger 8 automatic

Recommended Posts

Hey guys I got a charger 8 hydro. It’s been sitting a long time and I got the tecumseh 8 horse running good in it. Now the tranny isn’t wanting to do anything. It’ll barely spin the tires but I can grab them and stop it. What could be the issue? It has oil and I changed that. I seen a little tube coming off of the pump could that a vent. Any ideas would help. Thanks.

This manual should be helpful.

Thanks sounds like it might be junk then. There’s no release for pushing it correct? I have just found a parking brake.

I would check the linkages, cam & tow valve before writing it off as junk.

@Huntemcd can you elevate , jack stand this up , and have it running ?  with hydro units , previous neglect , and varnish build up , from filthy fluid , is like a liquid glue . personally would try to get some run time on that , heat it up , any improvement ? also try a cleaning flushing agent  to that oil . @Blasterdad  has good advise , to add , like everything else on these horses , its never a one and done . unit I  am currently working on , took hours , and road time to get to where it is now . only suggestions , pete

Thanks. I have had it running for quite awhile. Maybe 20 min working the hydro back and forth while it’s jacked up. I changed the oil when I got it then I just changed it again. It almost smelled like gear oil from the previous owner. Could that be the problem? It’s too thick to pump.  I put 10-30 in it. It’s kinda wanting to but the cam lever on the pump kinda jumps every few seconds in forward and reverse.

Does it have a filter on it? ( I'm not sure, no year listed in your description )

If so did you change it?

If so, did you use right kind?

No filter. They only made these 69-70.
