Bench start and stop M18 Engine

Recommended Posts

Good morning everyone...

I am looking to bench start a Kohler M18 and prove its worth before installing or selling. What do I need to wire hot and how do I shut it down after its been running. It has the typical 3 spade connector to the rectifier, and also a 2 wire plug, with one black wire, coming off the center of the Regulator and one is white, It is my assumption that the black wire coming off the center of the Regulator is DC voltage to the Battery.....and the outer two spades are 30-40 volts AC from the stator. So my plan is to ground the engine to a battery, and use a hot wire to spin the starter. I have done this on several K-engines with a hot wire to the coil, but this is a different scenario...so I am looking to you guys for help so I don't cook anything !!!  :eusa-think:

Thanks , John

I believe your M18 will have a magneto coil not a battery ignition, please check to verify.

If it does have a magneto coil you will have to ground the coil kill wire to shut the engine off. To start it ground the block and throw power to the starter. Kill wire on the coil would connect to the spade terminal in the middle. Do not send positive power to the coil, this will wreck a magneto coil.

if it has a battery ignition then it will be just like running a K model with a battery ignition. Power to coil to run, remove power to coil to kill.

So if I ground the engine...and send 12v to starter...the engine will run from the power generated by the magnets on the outside of the flywheel...and to shut down, ground the male spade on the coil...

So easy !!!!

I do not have points and coil, so I definitely have a magneto coil system

thanks so very much !!!   ACHTO  :text-thankyouyellow:   I did not want power that coil and cook the system, as I have only bench ran K engines with points, coil etc.  so asking first is far better !!!.

This is also how you would bench test all Briggs & Stratton engines.
