When did bearing numbers change?

You can't make this up:

 

I pulled old bearings from an idler pulley to change out, and copied the number down so as to get more... Well, 6203 bearings don't have a .75 ID now. Now they are .625. Who decided to change this? 

 

I even looked up several cross reference guides and sure enough, they are 5/8 bore now. But I took this bearing off a mule drive. I took the pic below immediately so I'd have the correct numbers. 

 

This spring's "prep work" is becoming a PAIN! :rolleyes:

There are a lot of 6203 bearings of different sizes id . Always been. Some 1/2" ID some 5/8" ID. Some 3/4.

 

6203-2RS-8 1/2 Bearing 0.500 inch

6203-2RS-10 5/8 Bearing 0.625 

 

6203-2RS-12 3/4"

There are also bearing that look like 6203's but have a slight difference in OD and thickness. Best to measure everything before ordering.

The convention of using the spec number suffix to indicate the number of “16ths” (e.g. -8 = ½”) carries into many different bits of hardware. I first noticed it in hydraulic fittings.

Idaknow, but if I grab a 6203 out of the drawer at work, it fits if a 6203 came out.

A std. 6203 is actually 17mm id x 40mm od. 12mm thick.    ( 1/2" shaft ). Some bearing manufacturers don't put all the numbers on them so you have to check them.

Well I ordered what appear to be correct: 6204. We shall see...

 

In the meantime, at least the paint on the pulleys gets to cure a little more. :rolleyes:

Are those mule drive pullies ? Some of them take a totally different bearing

 

1630-2RLD-C3 3/4" bore x 1 5/8" OD x 1/2" thick for the mule drive V pulley and a 6203-12 for the flat idler

 

The 6204 is a 20MM ( .78" ) ID  x 47MM ( 1.85" ) OD x 14MM ( .55" ) thick

Well I prolly got the wrong ones again. 

 

Used to be a shop in town that sold all kinds of manufacturing supplies- and specialized in bearings. I got used to cheating- meaning I just took the old bearing, or at least the races, and they'd figure out what it was. Almost always they had stock of what I needed.

 

And of course, during Covid they shut down. The business still runs, but the retail store never reopened.

@kpinnc  when ever I  buy a bearing , I  always want the wide rubber side shields , so its easy to do a re grease , when you insure the lubrication grade and rating , especially  heat and polyurea status , the bearing will work without effort and whinny noise. every one of my  6203 bearings is quiet and reliable . just my experience , pete
