pfrederi 17,736 #1 Posted March 4, 2023 Was making a new front axle pivot pin yesterday and got to thinking why WH machined a groove and added a E clip to the front of the pin. The tab and bolt on the back would seem to be adequate to secure it. i have made a couple in the past but I have no lathe so one i made a bit longer and drilled for a cotter pin. didn't do anything on the other nor the one yesterday. Am i missing something.
cleat 5,934 #2 Posted March 4, 2023 The ones I make also have a hole drilled for a cotter pin Here is one installed. Pin is not really required but is a good safety in case the tab breaks although I make my tabs much thicker so breakage is likely not going to happen.
squonk 41,096 #3 Posted March 4, 2023 I've see about a dozen broken tabs. Nice to have a clip or pin.
pfrederi 17,736 #4 Posted March 4, 2023 I made this one long enough to drill, the previous one isn't long enough...guess I will just live dangerously
wallfish 16,995 #5 Posted March 4, 2023 Agree, with a thicker tab welded on, there shouldn't be a need for any additional clips or pins
