School project bottom plow

I’m doing a school project and making a cutting disk for my bottom plow. So I will need a little bit of help with the dimensions of everything there. And explain the process of setting it up and proper usage.  I will be posting pictures and updates as we go. The one I have looks like the old rusty one and what I want it to look like is the one with the cutting disk

Cool project!  Most grounds I plow on, I take the coulter off   it’s design is to cut the sod clean before the plow rolls it over, but many times it fills up with “trash” or long grass, etc.

Coulters are an interesting feature on a small plow like we use behind a GT. I feel like the work great for the purpose that they are intended, plowing a small food plot or garden.  However, I echo the sentiments of @Pullstart when it comes to field plowing, coulters can be spell trouble.  I still like to use one as much as the conditions will allow (a result of all of those years on my grandpas farm—all of our AG plows had them).   We have lots of interesting information in the plowing thread regarding the usage and their proper setup.

Good luck on the restore! I’m glad you’re saving another plow and making it fit for use once again!

The coulter is easily an option to use or not. Brinley still sells a lot of parts for their plows and they would be an option for coulter parts / diagrams if needed.  Parts and Manuals;

Update. So on Saturday my friend that I’m doing the project with came over and we started to sand it and lube everything to start to get it free and moving. I have a few pictures and will probably be working on it this afternoon.

@TonyToro Jr.  that lubrication stain is what you want, goes very well with  wheel horse red , any time I  see a chalky  dull , horse related anything , start the paint soak down , have buffed out nasty looking paint , to a deep shine , pete

@TonyToro Jr.  , done this on my horses , its not difficult , just regular soaking oil into the paint . recently tried some , BLACK MAGIC , INTENSE , GRAPHENE , spray on . amazingly  slick and bright , always looking  for a gain , pete

Whatever you do, make sure the plow moldboard stays raw steel… no paint there mister.  Many fellas put a nice coat of bearing grease on the surface to help keep it shiny.  Stick it in the dirt a time or two and the grease wipes away and shines itself right up!

So I just went on brinlys website and added everything I needed total came to $87.45 we both think it’s a lot of money. What is your guy’s thought to ease the pain on the wallet? We even removed the hardware costs!

We used to save used motor oil and kept an oily rag with it in the implement shed.  Plow only got used once a year and we'd just smear it good when we parked it.  Looked kinda ugly but kept rust at bay.

That is totally up to your budget and $$ available. If it gets the job done you will have a nice piece of equipment for a lot less than cost of a new one. If, however, you can fabricate parts or come up with alternatives that may be a different story....

what are the items listed on that site?

What are the stipulations of the project?  If you need coulter parts, a I can likely help.  I won’t plan to ever use them.

The project is the refurbish the plow and get/make a coulter for the plow to bring into school for the project.

Dug this one out of the weeds around Thanksgiving. I can’t remember what I paid for it as I bought several things.  I’m thinking 35 dollars.  I recently cleaned it up and painted it.  I’ll have to get you a picture. I got all new PLOW bolts from bolt depot and they were so much cheaper than others.  Not exactly something you find at local hardware stores at least in my area

As you sort it out @TonyToro Jr. please keep us informed.   Looks like Pullstart is going to search for some of the bigger stuff.  Fasteners could be purchased from your local hardware suppliers.  I would happily send you a few basic parts if I have what you need.  A good metal fabricator at your disposal would be a huge positive for certain parts that you may not want to purchase but be careful if you need to pay them, because it could quickly become cost prohibitive.
