Speaking of dip sticks what does the oil look like? Anybody think a flushing will help?

Likely won't make much difference because the LSD is a mechanical type.

I think the 1st question to ask is how long have you had this horse and if you have had it for a year or so, did the Limited Slip work before ???   Also, when you put the rear end on blocks and turn one of the wheels (while in neutral), you have to turn the wheel slowly to check the differential.  Your trans works like a regular trans if the horse is turning left or right.  The Limited Slip only works when the horse is going in a straight line.

If, while turning either of the wheels you hear chunking or feel like something is jammed, it is maybe a broken spring or bad pinions and you must open the transmission.  Take good pictures and show us in this thread, we can walk you through this.  :occasion-xmas:

I'll jack up and turn the wheels tomorrow.

I put the tractor up and turned the wheels. When I turn each wheel forward the other turns backward. I do have a 103916 trans and axles from an 84 C-165. Is the 103916 limited slip?

No sir.

Nothing after 1973 is Limited Slip.

The 103916 is an 8 pinion differential and it should bolt right in if you want to open up your other trans...which I would recommend.  Did you notice any jamming while turning the wheels...if not...try holding one of the wheels while turning the other one.  You may still have a 10 pinion differential, but turning wheels may not really tell you.  You really have to open it up to0 know for sure.  If you take off the seat and clean all that gear drift out, you will find 2 bolts on top of the transmission.  If you shine a light down one hole and look down the other, you may be able to see the differential bolts that hold the differential together.  If you see 5 bolts, it is a 10 pinion.  If you see 4 bolts it is an 8 pinion.  That is your best shot without opening up the trans.

You did not answer the question on how long you have owned this horse and if the LS ever worked before.  Know that some people have changed out the 10 pinion differential for the 8 pinion differential in the past...for various reasons and can use the same transmission case.  :confusion-confused:

I have owned the tractor for about nine years and this is the first year of plowing. I recall getting stuck in the mud while trying to mow a wet field the first spring I owned it and the limited slip did not work.

I am comfortable opening up the trans. It can't be much different than my Bultaco five speed.

Likely the WH transmission will be less complicated.  👍👍

If all else fails, there is the Lincoln Lock option.

I've seen where you can flip ½ the pinions too.

No welding and it's reversible.

I thought about doing that but I didn't want to break axles going around sharp corners (which we have a lot of).

I pulled the two bolts from the top of the transmission and shined a light in but could not identify anything. I have a 69 Raider 12 that I am not using. The Raider 12 transmission has a huge brake that is very close to the axle and is actuated from the bottom. I think it is a 5060 although it has a tube with a plug on top for oil that is similar to a 5073. I would like to repair my 5073 but could these transmissions be swapped?

Your Raider might have a 5071, the last of the LSD 6-speeds. Another 6-speed LSD indicator is the extension of the oil fill on the lower left rear behind the axle (parts 71 and 72 in the picture). 5060 and 5071 are direct swappable since their brake system is the same. I have heard of 6-speeds with an oil fill plug at the top, but never seen one. 5073 is a 4-pinion 8-speed without LSD (correction: 10-pinion, LSD, 8-speed with dipstick. 5 March. Thanks for catching this, Steve.)

The #5073 is a 10 pinion limited slip 8 speed with 1 1/8" axles.  We call it an 8 speed (rather then a 6 speed) because of where the brake drum is mounted...on the cluster gear shaft.  The #5073 has a dip stick for checking trans oil.

The two 6 speeds...the #5060 had aluminum end plates on the differential...the #5071 had steel end plates.  Neither one of these had a dip stick and the brake drum is mounted on the 11/44 tooth mushroom gear.

All of the above is from the factory.  Since Wheel Horse made things interchangeable, any thing is possible.

Here is another tid bit.  If you have 1 1/8" axles, you have an 8 pinion or a 10 pinion differential.  If you have 1" axles, you have a 4 pinion differential...you can have 1" axles with 4 pinion differentials in 3 speeds, 4 speeds and 8 speed transmissions.

Exception...Heavy Duty transmissions (3 speeds) had 1 1/8" axles but they were the bevel gear differentials...no pinions.

I would use the Raider and open the transmission we have been talking about.  It seems to be the only way to tell what you have.  :confusion-confused:  Because you had no jamming and weird noises in the trans you are wondering about, I think I would use that horse also.  :occasion-xmas:

This is the trans in my 69 Raider 12. Is it a 5071?

There is really no way to tell at this point in history.  It depends on when you bought it, if you knew who had it before you, if someone bought it to flip, and any other scenario you can think of.  It comes down to this...YOU HAVE TO OPEN IT UP TO COUNT THE BOLTS HOLDING THE DIFFERENTIAL TOGETHER...5 IS A 10 PINION LIMITED SLIP...4 BOLTS IS AN 8 PINION.  IT REALLY IS THE ONLY WAY TO TELL ANY MORE, BECAUSE SOMEONE COULD HAVE CHANGED WHAT IS IN THERE.  Yes, I am yelling at this point.  Show me a picture of your differential and I will tell you what you have.  :bow-blue:

I will pull the trans this summer on my Raider 14. Once I get it out and split I'll know what I have. Your video is straightforward and I will have no problem switching out the spring if I have a LSD.
