Gear Drive Deck Height Plunger Mod.

Recommended Posts

ri702bill

All of us using the old style gear drive 32 or 36 decks have seen the damage done to the height quadrant and plunger.

This newest 32" deck has the least wear of any I've seen - yet I decided to "Fix" it

A larger head with 2 flats - a double D. The tire & rim were just a good locator for the pictures.....

Whatcha think ??

It looks like a nice upgrade; fits much better.  I don't have one of those types of adjusters, but I think if I did, I'd be asking you for a 'kit', lol!  Nice work!

In the words of @peter lena - identify the problem, come up with a possible solution, install the fix, GREASE it, and evaluate the results...  :handgestures-thumbup:

@ri702bill  figured ,might as well , after doing an initial hot oil  drain  after getting this thing going , have a few hours on it now , so fresh rotella 30 wt and  rislone zink , as I  run in a carb swap, found electrical start issue , fresh connections , dielectric grease , quick start ,settles right into an idle . also my shifting is easier , been , steadily using the shifter , well lubed clutch linkage . hopefully tomorrow a  road ride up to a cul de sac . be the only guy on the road, small bag of tools , lubricants , sea foam in tank , 2 fuel filters , no carbuncles in carb bowl . love this stage of recovery , verify your work / changes / improvements . made all my changes without  permission , also nobody  told me I  couldn't  do that , so I  did  it , staying in trouble , pete

@ri702bill  referring to your deck mod / check , think its an interesting check , often refer to  COLLECTIVE  DRAG  issues , those older decks are very basic at best , more like a sled drag , just your lubrication photos far exceeds the norm , of neglect and rust . other thing is that the greases used , should  easily stay with those gears , polyurea / 500 + deg rated is made for that . like anything I  refer to . have many hours / trials / tests , so I  know it works , with an improvement of function / operation . the 312 , i'm currently working on is an example of neglect and collective issues . getting it back to norm ,  BTW , get some lubricant into any other related movement areas . keep it greasy , pete

Like this area??? Similar, but different on the other end - did not want to drill & tap the pulley bolt...
