520 number 5 cleanup

I mowed with this one all last summer and it worked well but needs a refresh.

When I bought it there was a bit of a mouse nest in it.

 

This is it sort of cleaned up and how it looked last summer.

 

Tractor taken apart

 

Frame cleaned up, primed and painted.

Rear axle cleaned up and painted

 

Mid and front Tach's bolted to frame

 

Frame bolted to rear axle and steering gear installed.

 

Hydraulic supply and return lines connected to rear axle.

 

Front axle installed using new pin.

Hydraulic control valve cleaned up and new O rings installed.

Hoses have been cleaned up with new O rings as well.

 

That is where I am at right now.

Engine has been cleaned up and had the decarbon, valves adjusted etc last year and it is ready to go back in when I am ready for it.

I pull both console plates, seat, fender and gas tank every fall on the tractor I mow with.  I have never seen one that bad, it must have taken years to accumulate that much.  I use a garden hose and car wash to clean it out, then let it dry followed by oiling every moving joint in there.

Axle itself is perfect. Front tach hole is also very good.

However, the bore in the frame was worn so I drilled that to 7/8" and pressed in a steel bushing.

You can just see it in the picture with the frame upside down on the bench.

All good now.

Yes that is how I bought it.

I am good at keeping the traps set and don't really have much of a mouse problem.

Virtually every machine i have bought has had a mouse nest in it somewhere.

Hate them in my tractors but they can be much worse in the cars that get stored for the winter.

Installed tunnel assembly.

Lift arm and bellcrank did not want to come apart so I just cleaned it in place.

 

 

Matt's foot control auto center lever installed.

 

Parking brake cam plate installed.

@cleat very nice work on that ! building with  lucas  grease ?  also planning on adding a magnetic oil heater on that for cold hydraulic . counter issues ? that front axel mount pin and spindles , love a hi pressure grease , very solid / smooth , have really noticed that in my horses . good stuff, pete

per your photos -- when you rehab a frame, or the tunnel, or other steel parts...... what do you do to remove the rust before painting - - do you sand blast, use grinder, sandpaper, or one of the commerical spray rust remover products like from Rustoleum? thanks

also,  i see snow on the ground with a painted frame - - do you paint outside - what temps do you safely paint in -- 50 f or lower?

I am using Mobil Mobilith full synthetic.

I got it from work as they made a mistake and ordered way too much so I got some.

Seems to work well and was free..

I used to have access to a large bead blaster that was ideal.

However, that place closed up so I now just use wire wheels on a 5" angle grinder to get most of the loose paint and rust off then finish up with a random orbital sander.

I then use rustoleum primer before top coating with the colour of my choice.

 That was a warm day at about 55 degrees and even warmer in the sun.

The driveway has some hard packed ice on it that is slow to melt even on a warm day.

 

I paint small parts all winter long when I can just step outside with the part then quickly paint it and move back inside.

The shop furnace is kept at 43 and the paint seems to dry just fine.

Drilled second set of holes to mount hydro oil filter as the later models with hard lines need this mounting location.

 

Installed upper steering shaft, dash and wire harness.

Set steering gear gear lash.

The upper steering shaft bushing in the dash has been replaced by a ball bearing.

This is the same flanged bearing used by most wheel Horse tractors with the 3/4" spindles.

Got the motion control block and the majority of Matt's foot control installed.

It will need to get adjusted once the tractor is operational.

Rear fender and gas tank supports installed.

Oil filter holder installed and hydraulic lines tightened.

Parking brake latch installed.

 

Sealed fuse holders bolted into place

 

Close up of weather sealed 9 pin connector which I installed previously and has held up well.

I bought these on ebay from Europe.

Fuel tank cleaned up and installed.

 

Dash and steering wheel polished up.

As you can see, I simplified the wiring on this one and eliminated all the warning lights but the low oil pressure.

 

Plug installed where motion lever was.

Motion control cam assembly, control rod and heavy duty front fender bracket installed.

Engine installed.

Drive belt and hydro cooling fan installed.

Throttle and choke cables hooked up.

All wiring and vacuum hose hooked up.

Battery installed.

Engine filled with 30W and hydro filled with 10W30 oil.

Wheel Horse hydro filter installed.

Fuel line hooked up and fuel added to tank.

Installed PTO assembly and adjusted for proper operation.

 

 

Started and ran engine and also exercised the hydro motion and lift to purge the hoses.

Adjusted hydro control cam for proper operation and no movement of rear wheels with foot control in self center position.
