Word of the day. 2/17/23. Anachronism.

An anachronism is an error in which something in a movie, story, etc., is placed in a time where it does not belong. Anachronism can also refer to a person or a thing that seems to belong to the past and to not fit in the present.

There have been many occasions when I've felt I was an anachronism and should have been in an earlier simpler time.

For those of us who are old enough to remember the Roy Rogers show on TV the appearance of his sidekick Pat Rodgers driving "NellyBelle" in a wild west show would qualify as an anachronism.

Remember being at PA. State Fair with my Grandpa and getting a genuine "plastic" silver bullet from "The Lone Ranger". Must have been 7 or 8. What a thrill for me!

Back to anachronism...

I recently read a fictional book by one of my favorite authors. The setting was 1965 Biloxi Mississippi, and a category 5 hurricane had just destroyed the coast. The anachronism that I discovered was that the writer stated that the National Guard handed out cases of bottled water. Unless they were handing out Perrier, cases of plain bottled water was still about a decade into the future.

I know, it's just fiction...

Fiction or not, if it's trying to be accurate. It should be....

One of the things I like the most about the author Louis L'Amour is that he tried his best to create a story in a geographical environment that was real. If he said there was a rock, tree, creek, town,  mountain etc... Odds are about 99% it was really there during the timing of the story.

He wasn't entirely without anachronisms, but he did his best.

England had the first water Bottling plant in 1622

1st Plastic water Bottles available commercially was 1947.

But More than Likely it would have been Canned water in 1965 being handed out by the National Guard But Might Have been glass Bottles though as Saratoga Springs water company had been Bottling water since the 1870s did the author specifically say Plastic water Bottles Because it could have been cases of Glass Bottled water

Having been awhile since reading, I don't remember the specifics. He also referred to blue plastic tarps and bags of ice. All things that I don't remember having in 1965.
