C145 restoration

Blackm84

Well started restoration of a 1983 or 84 c145 started disassembling I have a few hours everyday my wife is working.  Forgive me if its kind of weird im posting from my phone until I can get a cable to connect to my pc.

So far its missing some bolts but really greasy.  Also I am missing some of the engine tin covers and the bolts to them.  Too bad its winter as I would have already had this degreased and power washed.  Big shoutout to Pullstart as he is helping me with some of my questions and missing panels.  I am going to replace the cracked fender pan with a metal one and try to find some of the missing parts.

those are certainly some dirty tranny fins - I call it black glue !!!

ALL hydros need a fan--they get really warm when being worked.

Where depends on the model.

Your c-145 has the Eaton Hydro and there is supposed to be a plastic fan on that pulley off of that gooey finned thingy.

Yea tonight I am going to soak it down with some dawn and some other degreasers as soon as it warms up I am going to spray it off and get it cleaned.  Definitely will be a PITA

Bodes poorly that there is no sign of the fan that should be there AND that the hydro pump/motor cooling fins are totally coated with gunk. If that tractor was worked hard, it may already have excess wear in the hydro. Certainly, at least, the oil has been way stressed.

Well started working again gettin it tore down.  I quit because I smashed my hand and saw i needed snap ring pliers.  Found the brake pedal way loose on the band not really moving anything.  How do you remove the pedal?  Also hit a road block on removing the steering wheel how does that come off? Almost looks like a roll pin?

Got the hydro soaking in dawn will get some stronger degreaser tomorrow. Found one spot where the metals broke. Soaking the rest of the greasy spots to get an idea of just whats going on or leaking.

A setscrew in that collar secures the brake pedal on its support rod.

 

There is definitely a hardened roll pin holding on the steering wheel. Search for “remove steering wheel” on this forum and you’ll find lots of threads on this topic. It is one of the tougher challenges in restoring these old horses. Strong suggestions:

1) your favorite penetrant applied often over several days or even weeks (implies mucho patience!)

2) use a roll pin punch not a flat-end punch to prevent mushrooming the top of the roll pin (and making the removal vastly more difficult),

3) make sure the steering column is extremely well braced to something NOT on the tractor (I use a 2x4 attached to the wall of the garage) BEFORE attempting to punch out the pin,

4) accept that it may be impossible to remove the pin without damaging the steering wheel -- some members cut the shaft on an angle and then on re-assembly weld it back together with a coupling with the beveled ends realigning the two pieces

I definitely agree with searching steering wheel removal here. I also think that I remember someone saying that they used a masonry/tile bit and drilled the roll pin out?

Yes I use a carbide tile/glass bit and drill them out. Works excellent. A regular bit won’t touch them.
