ri702bill 8,318 #3 Posted February 7, 2023 (edited) McMaster Carr has them - but - the depth is certainly greater than the length of the inserting tool. - They call them Shaft Repair Sleeves, not exactly cheap at around $50 plus shipping... I did one once on a Saturn timing cover seal - worked just fine... Edited February 7, 2023 by ri702bill
ebinmaine 67,462 #4 Posted February 7, 2023 Is there a way to purchase a different seal that would have the lip in a different location or perhaps a double lip versus single? Thereby changing the location where the seal rides on the crankshaft, avoiding the existing groove?

Wild Bill 633 845 #6 Posted February 7, 2023 @Chrishar I need the shaft diameter, housing bore and seal width to convert to either Timken/National of SKF/CR oil seals. Then I can look up available seal options in their catalogs.
ri702bill 8,318 #7 Posted February 7, 2023 I did a quick thumb thru on the McMaster site - the term "double lip" is misleading - it has the standard sealing lip in the same spot - the outermost is NOT a sealing surface, just a dust & dirt excluder - does not really enhance the ability to seal..... Careful how you read those Bill. You're correct in the way that you state that.. BUT the advantage of a double lip seal - can be - but NOT always, that the inner sealing ring rides on a surface far enough away from the original one that it doesn't get caught in it. ri702bill 8,318 #9 Posted February 7, 2023 (edited) Point well taken - but if the actual lip seal keeping the Barney-juice (or Barbie-juice) inside is in the same spot on the worn shaft.... net gain is zero. Edited February 7, 2023 by ri702bill had the wrong term for first type of oil

Chrishar 544 #11 Posted February 7, 2023 Do you have a parts number for the shaft repair sleeves
pfrederi 17,738 #12 Posted February 7, 2023 Kohler I guess likes to keep secrets. The Kohler part number for your seal is X-583-2-s. SKF interchange can't find it neither can Timken (see pic). To get a speedie sleeve you are going to have to know the dimensions so you could find a SKF equivilent (there may not be one)...and like ri702bill said the installation tool will most likely be to short to work. squonk 41,097 #13 Posted February 7, 2023 My only guess. Remove the crank. Fill the groove with JB Weld and sand, sand, sand
ebinmaine 67,462 #14 Posted February 7, 2023 Is it a possibility to drive the seal in a little further than normal and/or flip it around backwards?

Flipping the seal will not work. The lip is designed to work only in one direction
