@ebinmaine  know what they are called ?  thats your key for purchase . while at the local  ACE HWARE , recently , there was a product restocker , scanning every bin , to a chest mounted , I PAD  , without even looking up , he asked me what I  was looking for . told him I  was just snoopin around , understand , he said , lot of that going on , pete

Model varies. 

This flew off a Kohler K341  engine with a #30

That retainer does not have to be removed to release the ball. Steady pressure and a twist should separate them and snap back together.

That'd be true but for the previous owner caking a great layer of paint  on the whole thing.  

I tried with all the care and patience I could muster to get the clip off but it flew a ways to the ????? area.

Take a screwdriver and a hammer and tap the clip edge towards the opposite end of the rod. The clip will slide down the rod and away from the ball so you can unhook it. No twisting or turning. Clip stays on the rod. I know " Now you tell me!" :lol:

As my local Stihl guy assured me once after a similar incident, "Don't worry, it's still there". :)
