A HUGE one is cost vs quality vs country of origin. The total price of the open style carrier + locker type diff will be very comparable to the above listed Auburn Gear piece and that's USA made. At this point I'm leaning very heavily towards the Auburn Gear Grip-N-Loc complete differential. Pricing is good. Auburn reputation is good. MADE IN THE USA. Auburn makes a fantastic product regardless what it is. If I were to get back into the 4wd world auburn would be where my money would go for sure

If you’re replacing all of it while you’re there Auburn Gear makes good good sense. As another mentioned when assembling take careful attention in the backlash and setting up the gear set. 👍. No doubt you will have it the right way.

Serious advantage here is I'm NOT the one installing the carrier. Our friend is a heavy truck mechanic. The rear axle of the truck will be completely rebuilt from one side to the other with all USA made and/or NOS materials.

Not saying you couldn’t do this yourself but I commend a guy who knows where that line is between tackling a job or leaving it to the professionals. Money well spent to know it is done correctly. Sounds like you will have a damn nice rear end when done
6wheeler 603 #31 Posted February 5, 2023 It has been a while since I was into serious Mudding. We used to Mud race and pull trucks. Also? Tuff Truck competition. I have used Detroit lockers, Torsen Gleason, Auburn. And? ARB Air Lockers. Auburn is very good. But? I prefer the the Torsen Gleason as it was quieter for road use.For pure locking power? It is hard to beat The Detroit locker. On A straight track? They ruled. Cornering was a noisy clang festival. ARB lockers worked well in tuff truck jeeps for stump and rock climbing. I Never tried one on a 3/4 or 1 ton truck. I would say for you? And? What you plan to use it for? If the price is right? You will probably be happy with the Auburn. If I were buying one now. I would get a Torsen Gleason. My 2 vehicles I run mostly now? A Ford F 250 and an older Ford Explorer both have factory limited slip. Which, both work well. My Tahoe is open. But? Since I don't race anymore? I really don't need to build a bullet proof Differentials any more. But? If the F-250's ends up going bad? It will get a Torsen. Good Luck
Lee1977 6,663 #32 Posted February 5, 2023 (edited) My dads 1964 Ford pickup driving it you would never know it had a locking differential. If it started to spin you would hear a clunk and it would go on just like there was nothing on the road. We ordered everything heavy duty that didn't cost a lot more.
