Horse Newbie 7,008 #177 Posted October 15, 2023 (edited) I started tinkering again on the 1977 C-160. Still mostly cleaning… I did take the engine off frame, drained the tranny. Tranny oil looked good… just barely a hint of chocolate milk. Dropped the front axle to clean under there. Found the axle king pin broke where they all break. I sent @ineedanother a pm because he said he may have a front spindle I need. @ebinmaine. If @ineedanother doesn’t still have the front spindle( right side) I need you to dig me one up. It doesn't look like I have one in the shop in that condition with the threaded end but those are shorter and this one could be cut off, drilled and tapped if you preferred that. You have the standard 2 hole. It does need to be as close as possible so the washer is holding as much as it can of the end of the shaft to keep things tight. To clarify my thoughts about the spindles. There are 3 types I'm aware of. 1. Bolted on through/into the end. 2. Cotter pins through the spindle. 3. E or C clip slides into a groove near the end of the outer spindle shaft. I prefer to use the ones with bolts in the ends because my machines work pretty hard on very rough terrain. The other 2 types are likely just as rugged when properly installed and maintained. I have in fact spoken to folks who prefer the cotter pins because (to them) it's a more positive cross directional fastening point. I understand that logic. If your machine has 2 different types on it, it won't matter once assembled because there's a pair of grease caps that pop on at the outside. You won't see either/neither/both of the spindle ends. Your timing is good because as we transition from the two former workshops into the barn I've been spending time moving and organizing our "Parts Department". Today is another day I was planning on the so I'll see what's available here for spindles and wheels. How's your front tires? Also... Get ya impact driver out and pop that cylinder head off. Bill D 1,837 #194 Posted October 15, 2023 I personally stay away from "C" clip front spindles. I had a wheel come off once when the clip broke. Bolts or cotter pin spindles are best in my opinion. I have the old ones off Cinnamon Horse 1974 C160 from when I swapped over to a trailer hub type front spindle. The one good wheel I have is rusty but very usable. You really want to try to avoid removing that aluminum plate because it's a PRESSED IN bearing holder for the crankshaft.
