I couldn't find USA made just a few months ago.

Can you please get some documentation on that ?

I'd buy those if available.

:text-yeahthat:

The one I bought was for an M14.  I remember the package saying made in USA on it.  Sorry, I don't have the package anymore.

I started tinkering again on the 1977 C-160.

Still mostly cleaning…

I did take the engine off frame, drained the tranny. Tranny oil looked good… just barely a hint of chocolate milk.

Dropped  the front axle to clean under there.

Found the axle king pin broke where they all break.

I sent @ineedanother a pm because he said he may have a front spindle I need.

@ebinmaine.  If @ineedanother doesn’t still have the front spindle( right side) I need you to dig me one up.

Took the wiring harness out…

Hey Tim,

Glad you're back on this project. Looking good. PM your address and I'll ship this one off to you or I'll be in Charlotte November 1 and 2 for meetings if you want to get it from me there and save the shipping charges...

@ineedanother,

Do you have the right one with the threaded hole in the end of the spindle ?

How long is the part that goes through the wheel ?

4 1/4" . It doesn't look like I have one in the shop in that condition with the threaded end but those are shorter and this one could be cut off, drilled and tapped if you preferred that. Personally I wouldn't defer from this one with the pin. It's in really good shape.

So you’re saying,

if I wanted it to match the left side spindle( with bolt hole), go ahead and get yours, cut it down, and tap a hole ?

I may do that if I have to…

I have another member that is looking for one too…

Yep. I have a threaded one but it's worn a bit. I think if you use the one with the pin you won't even remember that the other one is threaded.

One concern for me doing that would be being able to drill a straight hole in the end of the spindle, and I know I don’t have a bottom tap…

No worries. Let me know though, I'll be off the grid a bit before I come to Charlotte in November.

10-4…

I do appreciate your willingness to help me with this.

I have your phone number and may text you to update… Will you receive text while you are “off grid” ?

I just went back and read through this thread to verify the wheel type.

You have the standard 2 hole.

Likely I've got some here.

I personally don't have the skillset or tools to end drill or tap a shaft perfectly straight.

It does need to be as close as possible so the washer is holding as much as it can of the end of the shaft to keep things tight.

To clarify my thoughts about the spindles.

There are 3 types I'm aware of.

1. Bolted on through/into the end.

2. Cotter pins through the spindle.

3. E or C clip slides into a groove near the end of the outer spindle shaft.

I prefer to use the ones with bolts in the ends because my machines work pretty hard on very rough terrain.

The other 2 types are likely just as rugged when properly installed and maintained.

I have in fact spoken to folks who prefer the cotter pins because (to them)  it's a more positive cross directional fastening point. I understand that logic.

If your machine has 2 different types on it, it won't matter once assembled because there's a pair of grease caps that pop on at the outside. You won't see either/neither/both of the spindle ends.

Your timing is good because as we transition from the two former workshops into the barn I've been spending time moving and organizing our "Parts Department".

Today is another day I was planning on the so I'll see what's available here for spindles and wheels.

How's your front tires?

Also...

Get ya impact driver out and pop that cylinder head off.

Also, also... If you want/need help with the carb  ~  send it to me.  I'll rebuild it for the cost of parts.

Correct…

My order of preference would be…

1. Both spindles match, with the bolts in the end.

2. Both spindles match with either E/C clips or cotter pins.

3. Mismatched

Probably not service worthy… They leak down, and I despise having to air up a tire before I move a tractor. Even though I do check the air on my CC before each time I mow.😆

I was gonna try and weasel out of the decarboning… doesn’t look like youse guys are gonna let me. Guess while I’m at it may as well check/ adjust valves and knock those balance gears out…

Thanks for being willing to do that. I have cleaned a few carbs, but I don’t have the experience that some of you fellows do.

I personally stay away from "C" clip front spindles.  I had a wheel come off once when the clip broke.  Bolts or cotter pin spindles are best in my opinion.  Maybe someone here can cut down a C clip spindle and drill and tap it for a bolt.

Aight… I done went and done it now…

How does this great, big, giant, enormous piece come off ?

I got the bolts out. Is the like a gasket or seal making it resist being pulled off ?

I took the bottom off.

I have the old ones off Cinnamon Horse 1974 C160 from when I swapped over to a trailer hub type front spindle.

The one good wheel I have is rusty but very usable.

They aren't perfect but the price is right.

See pics.

Don’t I have to remove that aluminum plate to get the balance gears out ?

No sir.

You really want to try to avoid removing that aluminum plate because it's a PRESSED IN bearing holder for the crankshaft.

If you take the four bolts out of the oil pan then you will be able to access the balance gears from the bottom of the engine.
