ineedanother 1,369 #52 Posted February 18, 2023 This was a lot easier 50 years ago when I would dunk it in a tub of gas and just dump that mess in a hole when I was done.

Odd how even a big block Kohler didn't intimidate me at all when I was 25. Just grab it, and move to wherever I needed to. Now just moving one from one shelf to another makes me feel like my head is about to burst, and my back is gonna pop like a busted recoil spring...
ineedanother 1,369 #54 Posted February 18, 2023 Hmmm. Another unsuspected twist... This motor is being harvested from what I believe is an unmolested 310-8, but the M10 is stamped K301 I have another K301 block bored to 3.25" so I know this has happened when blocks were needed but I have never heard of it in the mid to late '80s. Interesting....All indications are that the tins have never been removed before I did today. I roughly measured the bore but as we would have it, the plate on the shroud has been worn off by the throttle cable so that's a dead end.
ineedanother 1,369 #55 Posted February 19, 2023 That had to have been a bit of a senior moment It's a k301 block but 3.25 is the correct bore for a 10hp. Anyway, I got it cleaned up and adjusted the lash. Everything looks great other than the missing magnet. I pulled the harness out of the parts tractor and cleaned it up. I cleaned up the tins and got some high-temp paint on the muffler. Picked up the new front shoes yesterday. Getting closer...
ineedanother 1,369 #56 Posted February 19, 2023 Finally got the front shoes for the 165 yesterday too They broke their tire machine last week when they tried to mount these so I had to wait until they got parts in for that. New bearings are in and I'll get them put on tomorrow. 2

Kohler used blocks cast for K301 on the K241- at least in some batches. I've seen many K241s and even a few M10s with K301 cast into them. You're not having a senior moment.

I have a couple 10hp stamped k301 but when I looked at this one my senior moment was that a 3.25 bore was 12hp which would have been fine in that block and contradictory to the M10 tins. 3.25" is not 12hp... All good though, still a good motor
ineedanother 1,369 #59 Posted February 26, 2023 Still working to get these rolling. Shipment of gaskets and other stuff lost for 10 days now Oh well. Moving on as best I can. Went ahead and reassembled the M10 with a good used head gasket torqued to 30 ft/lbs and hand-cut valve cover gaskets. I have to pick up an exhaust clamp and get an oil drain pipe on it but I'm pretty sure it will run well as it is. It's still missing a flywheel magnet but @johnnymag3 has some for me that we're getting shipped shortly. I swapped wiring harnesses with the 310-8 onto this frame so the M10 can be retrofitted and so I moved on to the dozer blade. It's been in storage for a while and I was hopeful to use it and likely will, but I'm afraid it's just not entirely compatible with a 312-8. The footrest interferes with the lever so I will only be able to cant it left or push straight ahead which is not terrible, but not ideal either. We'll see. Still plenty to do but I haven't had them a month yet and I'm getting close.
