ineedanother 1,369 #26 Posted February 5, 2023 Before I left the shop I had to move the tiller so I went ahead and hoisted it to get a better look. I'll drain the gear case before I do anything more but there are no signs of leaks, the tines look to be lightly used and everything turns smoothly. Very promising. I need to get out and take the bracket from the 160 some time this week but I talked to Lowell yesterday and have a rock shaft and belt on the way so this should be behind the 165 soon 3
c-series don 8,699 #27 Posted February 5, 2023 (edited) @ineedanother Did you say tiller behind a 165 ?!! This tiller (although it’s not a great picture of it) is a 1974 model 1-1251 that I bought in 1985, when I was 15! It’s now on its third set of tines. I also have a newer style tiller like yours that I believe works better because of the end plates and hinged leveling plate on the rear. That one is currently undergoing restoration. Yes! that is a nice ! I had initially thought I would use my c-160 hydro because of the lift but the F-bracket is cracked on that one and the replacement frame is still stripped and waiting for me to get to it. I'm going to see how it goes with this 8 speed 165 and my suspicion is that the hi-lo range and fixed speed will do well. I'm beginning to think this will be my favorite
ineedanother 1,369 #29 Posted February 5, 2023 Today was hit and miss again but good overall. I got the wheel studs and new skins on the rear of the 165, that went well. I didn't address the shaker mounts yet but that has to move up the to-do list. That having been settled, I thought I had better start to deal with the power on the 312 before it ends up sitting under a tarp somewhere so I drug a 310 parts tractor out to see where that might go. That mess sat out in the weather for years but for me it's essentially a $100 parts tractor with a Magnum 10 and a good gear box (I think). Lots of corroded wires to deal with, bypassing safety switches, and jumping the solenoid to turn it over, but it runs! Both carbs I had in hand were bad but I think the 312 will soon be a 310 and suitable for my needs. I need to do a bit more homework on exactly how I'll be switching from coil to magneto but I'll get a carb rebuilt first and deal with that in due time.

ineedanother 1,369 #31 Posted February 6, 2023 (edited) There seems to be no middle ground with welch plugs. They either go in and look great, or they're a turd. Regardless, I think I have a carb ready for the Magnum 10. Time to get some sleep and punch the clock for a few days... ineedanother 1,369 #32 Posted February 11, 2023 It was a good day. A rock shaft and tiller belt came in the mail so I got to work Went over to the shop and wrenched a bit on the 161. The rock shaft went in fine so I went ahead and got the bracket bolted up and got the tiller in line. It took some fiddling to get the lift and chain adjusted to get enough travel. I cleaned up the tank, got it reinstalled and mounted the PTO and belt. Buttoned it up and it's finally ready to cut some dirt 1

I saw that, and maybe up to 6" or so at elevation. The wife and I considered taking a day or two for a last-chance ski outing but she can't get away and I really can't afford the time right now either. Hunker down and I hope y'all don't get handed a mess. 2

ineedanother 1,369 #38 Posted February 12, 2023 Made some progress today and probably have my work cut out for me. I'd really like to get this together to push dirt that I till up with the 161, even though this might not be the smartest thing to do given the relatively low HP and 1" axles on the 8-speed. Regardless, I went ahead and pulled the ailing 301 off for who knows what down the road. I ordered valve cover gasket s, a head gasket, and a few other things for the M10 yesterday and pulled it off the 8-speed parts tractor today. I snapped one of the shroud bolts off and found some damage to wiring so I'll get back on the AGAIN. I don't plan on doing much beyond de-carbon and valve adjustment but we'll see. Clean-up is first on the list. I can't see how it was cooling very well as cruddy as it is and that's a little concerning, but the majority of that is low on the block so I'm hoping that the top side looks good when I pull the head. Done for today though. 3

ineedanother 1,369 #42 Posted February 14, 2023 Got a bracket for the 8-speed today I don't expect the magneto for the M10 or the valve cover and head gaskets for either of them until next week so I figured I might as well pull the dozer blade down and give it a once-over. I'll probably go ahead and fit it to the 8-speed while the motor is off. I wish I had taken pictures of the blade, it's been in storage for a long time and is a little rough but it's all there and looks like it still has good bones 2

I built a grader blade and it works great with stone and dirt.

Excavating some areas in my yard is how this all started last year and by the time I move any dirt I'll likely have 4 working horses One for the tiller, one for the dozer blade, one with a cart, and another for good measure 4
Tonytoro416 1,034 #47 Posted February 16, 2023 Mid mount was a bucket list for me also. Was lucky enough to get one bought. Cleaned it up and painted it. Ready to use it that’s for sure 1

ineedanother 1,369 #50 Posted February 17, 2023 The ignition coil came today but the valve cover and head gaskets probably won't be here for a couple days. I had a bit of time earlier so I pulled the flywheel to make it a lighter lift on and off the bench. Well, at some point it threw a magnet No huge deal but something else to address. I can't see any physical damage to the stator which is great. I can't imagine how something even as soft as a magnet got out from underneath the flywheel without doing some sort of damage. I'll probably post something later about the story behind the parts tractor where the M10 is coming from but I couldn't be more optimistic at this point. I pulled the head and there's no sign of it ever leaking and the cylinder doesn't have the first scratch It had sat outside uncovered (other than the hood) for at least a couple years before I got it and the PO said it just needed a fuel pump. It started right up after I addressed that and cleaned the carb so I'm tending to believe his story. As far as the bones are concerned, I'm going to clean and check the head, adjust the valves and feel pretty comfortable with running it.
