so i have been working on this engine for some time i’ve done a lot with it and it’s never ram quite right and i rebuilt the engine new valves new rings new pistion new connecting rod and such but it’s just not seeming to run quite right and it puffs out the carb when running and there seems to be a lot of carbon built up on the intake and exhuast valve and it probably has saw about a hour of run time it’s can be hard to start and dosent seem to rev up very high when pulling back governor arm and it’s not even snapping back do you guys think the engine could possibly be not timed correctly this was my first time rebuilding any engine what do you guys think i should look at

perly

Your ignition points set your ignition timing. Check to be sure your ignition points are set at 0.020".

@prondzy did a great tutorial on engine rebuilds, check it out and be sure you followed the steps presented in the thread.

Did you do that? They have to be adjusted to spec.

Are the throttle linkages in the correct holes in the carb & governer arm?

Is the governer adjusted correctly?

Was the ACR installed correctly?

Points gap correct?

Carb adjusted / working correctly?

Just a list of things to check....

Only other thing I can think of is compression ring and wiper ring might be in the wrong groove or wiper ring or compression ring is upside down. I can't remember which one only goes in one way.  I don't know if this would even make that big of a difference I might be way out in left field on this one.        What was the reason you rebuilt in to begin with.  What was it doing or not doing at that time.....

it would get oil on top of the piston when cranking

I didn't ask where , I asked how. What timing mark did you use? Did you use a timing light. Meter?

there is a method called static timing, where you set the points to fire at TDC based on the piston location.  If you don’t have the tools to do that, try .018” gap
