Nice one Steve... when you get a chance, will you pop off one of those front wheels so we can see that four bolt hub setup? :thumbs2:

first off...buzz...dorky is a bad word...I will take it as no harm intended.

I post these pictures to find out what is stock and what is not. I do not like the reflectors either, and I am looking to do a restore on this tractor and the 502 that I have left to get running. Please be constructive, because I really want to know what I am up against. This has a hyd lift and I am not sure if that is stock. The front wheels (being a 4 bolt set up) is news to me. My dad bought these tractors and I am trying to get these running-first...after 15 years of sitting....and also I have gotten involved in this forum and have learned alot about the horses., and I can tell you, my blood is starting to run wheelhorse red. I want to know what is not stock with this horse...points me in a direction...the pin striping, my dad did on all 4 tractors...after tearing 3 of them apart, it tells me that he spent tons of time to make the horses his own, he did the striping. I am new at this, and I really want to know what is rare, not stock and get some help to decide if I want to make the horse right. The 502 was in parts in the shed, and I may not have all of the parts. It is the last horse to get running...pull start techy, :thumbs2: When I post pictures of that when I get that running, I would appreaciate comments about that horse also. I can tell you that I am a round-hood kind of guy...if I do a restore...I would like to do it right the first time :ROTF: I was kind of taking pictures of a before and after...but if I don't know what is wrong before...I can't make the after right. Does that make since? :ychain:

jason...take them apart tomorrow...may call you, because I don't know what is not right. Looks like it came thet way to me at this point.

Hey Steve,

I think buzz was really just joking see the little man pulling the chain!!

Here is what i see not stock just right off the pictures,,,the hy2 looks stock to me

Steering wheel

Cut out for muffler

Hey no pun intended on the hood, you could drop this tractor off at my house any day. :thumbs2:

michael...I did not take it as a bad thing from Buzz :thumbs2: I didn't know that was a chain...thiough it was a staff.

thanks for letting me know what is not stock.

I knew the stripping was not, the head lights are gone in the restore, and the reflectors...I did not like also...they are dorky...but I needed a picture of before.

I thought the muffler was not right, because when I cleaned it yesterday, I noticed some rough edges where it was cut.

The steering wheel though...has the WH horse in the center...what should the steering wheel look like?

I really appreciate the info...and as I said...I did not take Buzz"s coment in a bad way at all...I agree with him.

Steve, didn't mean any harm. Sorry. You need a new belt guard also. As far as the pinstriping, after it's restored and painted, I'd put the pin stripes back on. It might not be how it came from the factory, but it's how it came from your dad.

steve the muffler looks right its the piping running from the engine to the muffler that is incorrect..The steering wheel is a late model not sure what year....Look in the picture gallary....you will get some good ideals of the original stuff

Thats going to be a nice tractor Steve!

In case you havent realized yet, the 502 and 702 are the same tractor except that the 502 was a recoil start Tecumseh, and the 702 was an electric start Kohler. The belt guards are different to suit the different motors, but otherwise the tractors are identical. That might help you see whats "factory" and whats ben modified.

Good job!

The steering wheel is the same as my 1977 C series. It is 90 degrees off the spokes should be horizontal with the wheels straight. I guess you dad just liked to be different.

I would lose the reflectors and the lights but keep the rest, I like the pin stripes.

There are a few other minor differences. The 502 did not have an amp meter. It also didn't have a starter push button switch or key switch. It used a toggle switch mounted in the hole where the 702's amp meter was.

I agree that this looks like an outstanding candidate for a quality restoration.

Here are some of the missing/wrong/altered parts parts that I can see. Most of these have already been mentioned.

The steering wheel is wrong.

The headlights are wrong.

The reflectors don't belong.

The hood has been cut out so the muffler would fit. It should have a peice of iron pipe extending outside the hood for the muffler to screw on to.

The front wheels/hubs are wrong. It should have the same front wheels as the 502. The spindles may have also been changed/altered, yet the steering arms are still correct.

The parking brake lever cover is gone.

The fuel tank cap is wrong.

The hood retaining bolts are wrong. It should have the ones with the knurled heads.

The throttle cable knob is wrong. This knob should be the same size as the smaller choke control and should have the word "throttle" written on it.

I can't see the mower/underbelly attatchment mounts very well in your pics, but they look like they may be later model mounts.

The HY-2 hydro lift is not "stock" but was an available option for this tractor that greatly increases it's value and versatility. I'm not, however, sure that the axle mount for this one is correct. If it looks like the later tach a matic plow mounts it's not technically correct, but it obviously works. This one should have a more crude mount that requires a plow to be mounted by bolting it to the axle mount. The bolt on system is a pain to deal with so if your's has been converted to a more convenient style you may want to leave it as such.

I'm kinda torn on the pinstripping. It aint "correct" but it does look sharp.

Great find and that wheel horse has a lot of character! One of the nice things about them is people used them and loved them so much that they "made them better" with their own additions!

Steve,

Nice tractor. But, now I have a problem. After looking at your 702, I kinda wish I still had my 753. I might have to go look for another round hood. :thumbs2:

well jason...I broke down the front tire and I never would have believed the insides...looks like someone took a boat trailer hub and made it work with spacers and tubing. I think the spindles are stock.

in the last picture, notice the 3 pieces of tubing...1 fits in the rear bearing...then there is a middle piece...the third fits in the front bearing. and basically shim out the spindle to the size of the bearing. The setup works and is tight. The tractor does float a little going down the sidewalk, but that could be the tires and air pressure. No clue why it is built like this.

Hey Steve, I like your 702, pin stripes, lights and the reflectors. If you don't mind me offering another opinion... I think since your Dad put so much time and energy in making this his 702, I would just wash it, clean it up and keep it exactly like it is. That's a great memory sitting there and you don't want to loose it. " My Dad's 702" You can do a complete restore on another tractor from someone else but I'd keep this one as-is.

Thanks Steve. Someone was just asking the other day if this setup was possible. A couple of step by step pics as you put it back together might be helpful too. Thanks for posting these. :thumbs2:
