peteze 10 #1 Posted January 19, 2023 i can't put tractor in gear. it grinds. i changed belt -idler goes all the way away from engine and transmission. All linkage seems good. brake pad is okay. is there something in transmission that makes drive pulley disengage? i also changed transmission oil. any ideas would be greatly appreciated. the tractor is wheel horse 654.
8ntruck 7,080 #2 Posted January 19, 2023 Have you put the belt guard back on? The belt guard has some guides that hold the beltoff of the engine pulley when the clutch is disengaged. Without the belt guard, the belt will still rest in the engine pulley enough that it will turn the transmission input shaft and prevent the gears from shifting.
Ed Kennell 38,624 #3 Posted January 19, 2023 The belt guard must be in place as the lip on the bottom of the belt guard supports the slack belt helping to prevent it from grabbing the engine pully. There may also be an angled clip on the idler pulley that must be adjusted so it pinches the belt when the clutch disengaged. There also could be wire clips on the front and back side of the engine pulley that when adjusted properly will help to stop the slack belt from contacting the engine pulley. There is nothing inside the transmission that you can disengage. You MUST stop the belt from moving before changing gears. Do not attempt to put in gear with the belt moving....you will damage the transmission. to the Pete. 3

wallfish 17,078 #5 Posted January 20, 2023 If the belt guard is missing, cut or damaged there are still ways to guide the belt so it stops with the clutch pedal and stops the gear grinding.
953 nut 55,743 #6 Posted January 20, 2023 A piece of angle iron run directly under the bottom of the lower half of the belt will catch the slack with the clutch depressed.
Ed Kennell 38,624 #7 Posted January 20, 2023 (edited) 1 hour ago, wallfish said: there are still ways to guide the belt I used a series of pins and bolts to support the belt on the low rider build. You can see a couple of the pins on either side of the belt tensioner arm. When the clutch was depressed, the pulley pushed the belt forward away from the engine pulley and the clip on the idler pully pinched the belt locking it from moving. It worked great.
