Proof of concept

Bit of background - Need to move four foot pieces of 2x2 angle iron from storage to BBQ pits at a lake club.  Last year used the trailer, but it too big to easily maneuver about the table, trees and rocks.  Plus I am driving on a hillside that makes it even trickier.  Thought about getting a rear cargo carrier, but then I have another piece of paraphernalia I have to store that would rarely be used.

 

Idea #1 - Put my hitch mounted bike rack on the 312-8 use it to carry the material about the picnic area.  Tested the idea by moving some firewood from woodshed to the house.  It worked, but the hitch bobbed a bit too much on the back and that was on flat ground.

 

Idea #2 - Put a wheel under the hitch to stabilize.  Using a pivoting dolly wheel that I have I create the concept in the photos below.

I would just add a "locker" on the hitch / receiver. simply presses the hitch to the receiver, eliminating bounce rattle and roll...

 

Made mine in about 5 minutes out of some w section scrap post and a single u bolt... it really works well...

How do you load the 4' pieces, with the bike rack up or down?

Did the same. Couldn’t stand the “clunk” as the trailer went over bumps or the rattle when the trailer was off.

 

@CCW Same question as @Ed Kennell: Not sure how the angle iron will get carried. Upright in some sort of tray atop the hitch tongue and stabilized with the bike-supporting arms?

 

Be sure to account for the swivel caster's up/down movement over rough ground relative to the tractor.

Just ratchet strap the caster wheel to the bundle of angle iron. put another ratchet strap around bundle towards other end. use anything you have around in bundle towards hitch to attach to tractor. So the angle iron itself becomes "trailer" so to speak and follows tractor. Hitch end must swivel like trailer hitch. Could be as simple as metal with hole in end to go through tractor hitch with pin. On top of hitch.

          I see a snow blade and frame next to the tractor. Lay the steel across the snowplow frame and ratchet strap them to the blade. easy to load and unload and if the blade is in the up position when being loaded you won't struggle lifting the blade.
