Tonytoro416 1,034 #26 Posted December 29, 2022 The laws regarding manure and spreading are pretty stringent. Some states worse than others but all for good reason IMO

Reminds me of Dave's outhouse.... @davem1111 Don Well, in my opinion, I would rate the relative stenchiness of the common varieties of "manure" as follows, from less bad to worst: Horse Cow Human Chicken Pig To further qualify this a bit... first, I think it may be a toss-up between chicken and pig, and of course, all of these are worse in large concentrations than in small amounts. But then.... a small amount of human can probably beat a moderate amount of chicken or pig. For chicken and pig, I am only referring to the large commercial operations. A few in the backyard isn't too bad. The way it's being accumulated and handled can effect this rating also. Cow manure, if kept in mostly liquid form along with urine, it can get pretty nasty. I have been around the horse, cow, and chicken poop in large amounts, and they are "bearable", but have only driven by a commercial pig operation and it was *much* worse than any of those to me, so it gets the most stenchy rating. My parents' place used to be, and my brother's still is, next to a thousand+ acre dairy operation, and many of us have worked there at various times. They scrape the runny stuff from the concrete barnyard into either a tank or a holding pond. Later it is spread on fields using a tank trailer, dubbed "the Honey Wagon". When they do this, if you are within a half mile or possibly more to the field, you *will* know it. My brother was hosting my niece's outdoor wedding and reception at his place a couple years ago, and called the dairy farmer ahead of time, because the hay field next to him had recently been cut & baled which heralded an impending Honey Wagon visit. He asked the farmer to please not spread manure till AFTER the weekend wedding. He complied with the request, thank God. Personally, I'd rather be smelling the scents of country living than the smells of the city. 2
