fuel line barbs / connections

Recommended Posts

peter lena

when  installing fuel line , typically , the  fuel filters  , connections, barbs are same size , found using  correct size spring clamps and square  ended linemen's plyers  make that easy,  cut your line , slide on the clamp , back 3-4 "  so its  out of the way .  regularly use a tiny amount of dielectric grease  on the barb ends , makes the connection simple easy . once done  squeeze plyer  clips back to  connection .  no leaks  easy , pete

Excellent write-up Pete. :greetings-waveyellow:

Spring clamps are better than regular hose clamps... mainly because typical worm screw hose clamps tension around the screw area while spring clamps tighten around the complete hose surface area.

Performance radiator group taught me that.

But why wouldn’t equal pressure be put around the whole thing ? How does the clamp know where the screw is ? Has anyone done a lab test to verify ?

Not a 'perfect circle'.  Almost... but not quite.  On the smaller sizes, the problem becomes worse.  They're 'generally' OK on big ole radiator hoses, but when you get down to the small sizes they can become problematic.

I've taken to using the 'crimp type' past few years.

That's been my experience. :twocents-twocents:

With anything to do with plastic... the pressure exerted at the screw area can damage/deform plastics.

I'll have time to actually watch this video later, but I think this video might clarify further...

Maybe this one as well...

Video brings up a point I had not considered... since it's a SPRING, it will adjust for temperature changes.  Shrinkage in the cold, swellage in the heat.

He said that the leak on his radiator hose didn't show up for a couple months after installing the worm drive clamp.

I have heard that silicone hoses must NEVER use the worm drive clamps, ALWAYS the spring type.

@Jeff-C175... I have a 3 core radiator in the blue ranger... made out of aluminum.

Regular worm style hose clamps will leak right off the bat... while spring style will seal right up... and if it's cold outside, even if it leaks a smidge at first upon initial hose install, it will adjust as soon as the hoses warm with the car running. I've never had an issue since installing stock type spring hose clamps.

Same with fuel line... although I must admit, I have used worm style hose clamps on many a tractor fuel system... :P

One and done - not reusable, but they do work well....

@Snoopy11  agree with the film , BTW  the  spring clamp I  use on  w/h  fuel lines is the DARK GREEN  size , its perfect on all my fuel lines ,  that dielectric grease  just a tiny bit at fitting to hose , point makes a hose to  stop very easy  , then squeeze up the clamp , no leaks or issues . pete

@Horse Newbie   don't forget use   SQUARE EDGE PLYER  makes those clamps a non issue  , wide  end grips  will not slip  , pete

I really need to do that...

I would only use about 3 out of the box before I lost the rest of them though...

I’ve noticed in the past that you were using 5/16” barbed devices with 1/4” fuel line, that seems to be asking for trouble where the fuel line is bulging.  Any comment?

@Snoopy11  actually  its very close to  size to size ,  bulging is very minimal , no leak's  or  stress cracks  ,  using clear vinyl  fuel rated line , have the same set up on my 3  horses  , had more tinkering with the related linkage  , fuel lines have been a non issue .  had not really thought about the accuracy  of fittings today , everything is china made , and  sizes are not up to true specs . that  linkage related detail , snugging up  spring pull  to linkage , super lubing related movement areas , has really made  for  not only quick starts , but almost immediate , zero choke use.  very impressive , cold start in sheds , barely turns over / start , no smoke  quickly settles down to a  cold running speed . like the zone they are  all in , regularly , start / run them , did a couple of  miles with the c-85 the  other day , cul de sac , ran like a bear , always  tinkering around . pete
