Sheet metal repair help needed

Recommended Posts

D_Mac

Here are some photos of my C-161. If you blow the picture up and look at the same area you will see the same damage. My machine had stock muffler and a properly installed hood. Someone talks about making a heat shield for it. I believe @c-series don talked to Mr. Pond about this very issue. Mine the decal was burnt too. I replaced the decal but did not fix the sheet metal or paint.

When you get ready to apply body filler you will want bare metal and a real good mechanical scratch in the metal 36 to 40 grit. This will give the filler some thing to hold on to. Avoid putting filler over paint, the results of this is rarely satisfactory. Small little pits with paint in them should not be a huge deal but try to dig them out best as you can, a Dremel works good for cleaning them out.

Filler should be fine with the heat as long as it is not extreme. 1/2" to 3/4" air space between the side of the exhaust and filler is adequate.

When you say "fill" are you talking about bondo or kitty hair?

That kitty hair stuff is ridiculously awesome. :)

Eric is correct 78 and newer used a larger diameter can putting it closer to the hood, with the exception being the 8hp models. They still used a small can. You’ll note that almost all 78-79 C-series have some form of discoloration in the paint in this area or it’s even burnt off. @dmac Yes I spoke directly with Cecil Pond on this issue and pointed out the bubbling paint on my freshly restored C-121. He said, and I quote “Well now that’s a bad design isn’t it?!! “ The picture in the upper left ( I forgot what you call it? Maybe avatar?) was taken moments after our conversation and his signing of my tractor. It’s me, Betty and Cecil. I’m pretty proud of that picture! Here’s a picture of the heat shield I made for it, seems to be working well. However I’ll note that I don’t work this tractor hard and at full throttle anymore.

What's the distance between heat shield and hood you think?

1/2"?

By kitty hair, are you referring to Marglass / (fiber glass reinforced filler) I only use one coat of fiber reinforced filler over a patch repair panel. It is great for sealing up any pin holes that may be left behind when the patch was welded in. I then follow up with a coat of regular filler. Fiber reinforced is strong but it is not as easy to work with as regular filler is.
