t_furl43 78 #1 Posted December 9, 2022 Was wondering what your guy’s opinion is. is a series 1 kt19 worth rebuilding? A couple days ago mine locked up, it’s in my C195 I would like to keep it all original but if it’s not worth rushing into I would still do it in the future but I would just re-power it for now. 953 nut 55,218 #2 Posted December 9, 2022 (edited) First I would suggest you do an autopsy and determine what made it lock up. A flywheel magnet coming loose would lock the flywheel and not require an engine rebuild. What was going on at the time it locked up? Was the oil level good? Will the crank shaft move at all? Start with removing the flywheel. If nothing looks out of place there then remove the heads and take a look at the cylinders. I kind of made like her slight squealing noise and kinda started to slow down I shut it off immediately and when I went to go try it again no budge, There’s no oil leaking anywhere and it has oil in it 1
953 nut 55,218 #4 Posted December 9, 2022 Well That kind of rules out the least expensive options, sounds more like connecting rod welded itself to the crankshaft,
8ntruck 6,999 #5 Posted December 10, 2022 I'll be watching this with interest. The KT19 series 1 engine in my C-195 fires right up and runs well. But, it is smoking. I'm kind of wrestling with the same question. I need to take the heads off and take a look at the cylinders before making a decision. Koehler considers the KT19 to be obsolete, so OEM parts are getting rare. If you want to stay in the 20hp range, new and used engines typically have 4 figure price tags. A do it yourself overhauls with machine shop work is going to be right at 4 digits...if you can round up all the parts. Did my magnum 18 $900 almost 2 years ago. Parts prices are up and availability is down...
Wild Bill 633 845 #7 Posted December 10, 2022 My understanding is the KT series 1 has a splash oil system and the series 2 has the improved pressurized oil system. https://madison.craigslist.org/grd/d/madison-kohler-kt-19-motor/7565358825.html

It is a low pressure system with no direct pressurized oiling to the crank.
