Throttle problem

Need a little help figuring out which way to go, thank you for reading, up until this morning WH tractor 814-8, was doing fine, from the get go i could not increase throttle even while seeing throttle cable moving as i moved lever, once i did start, any increase in throttle stopped/stalled the engine, after 30 min (and even till now) tractor would turn over but not start, battery checked out ok (recharged battery when it stopped even turning over) battery was back to filly charged in 1/2 hour, so while it still turnes over it will not start, fuel pump?, or something connected with Throttle since this was the problem it turns out from the get go, any suggestions or ideas would be appreciated.

Have you been using gas with ethanol? That stuff has killed many a fuel system. Check  the fuel flow coming out of your fuel pump to see if it is pumping well, if not replace your gas hose and fuel filter and start using Non ethanol gas.   https://www.pure-gas.org/

My 414-8 throttled down and shut off and it was one of the plastic throttle linkage clips had broken. I ordered three to have an extra one after this problem. It fired right up after installation which took probably three minutes.

@Skwerl58   been using  super lube oil on my throttle cables and related linkages for years , available at local H/W  store  small bottle  about $ 6 , makes cables slide / move with total ease ,  have 2 fuel filters on my horses , and  use  STA BIL fuel treatment in all my fuels. no debris in my carbs , and no starting / running issues . all my fuel lines are clear fuel rated vinyl , no problems , pete

You didnt mention whether you had spark?? I know your problems started with throttle, but with it now spinning over and still not starting - need to also confirm if it still has spark....

Try pouring a teaspoon of gas in the carburetor and then quickly try to start.  If it will run a few seconds they you have a problem with the fuel system.  From what you say, my thought is that the carburetor is dirty.

 

You cannot fully charge a nearly dead battery in half an hour, it would take ten hours or more.

Sounds like a clogged main jet to me. @lynnmor sorta covered that. Take the carburetor apart and clean it, or replace it outright. :greetings-waveyellow:

 

Members here can walk you through cleaning it if you so desire. :)

If you're getting good spark.Id go to the pump, disconnect outflow into a container, spark plug out and crank to see it has a consistent pump flow.If good. id go with a good carb cleaning next.

Thank you all for you help with ideas, today, Today i put meter on Fuel pump(1st), turned key to on position, saw 12 volts (11.57) to be exact, and could hear pump working, next (2nd) i went upstream on gas line to remove fuel filter,removed vise grip on fuel line and nothing came out downstream of gas filter, b4 i assumed it was filter, my last step (3rd) was to again pinch gas line with vice grip, removed gas filter and removed vice grip upstream of filter on gas line, and no fuel came out of gas line, gas tank is 3/4 full, trying what i’ve heard and seen on site, it would seem gas line is blocked at tank discharge spot, only thing i realized later that i did not do was crack open gas tank fill cap, only way to eliminate that point is to loosen cap tomorrow, if fuel still does not flow, i’ve gotta remove fuel in tank to replace fuel line it would seem, while its not my first rodeo, i’ve never had a blocked fuel hose, anything i’ve missed ( or not thought of) i’d be glad/happy to try any new ideas. Thank You for reading and  replying.

did not put meter on battery, my bad, battery is only 18 months old according to date placed on battery, correct you are about recharge time for really weak( or even dead battery) this one recharged in like i said 30-45 min, so yea battery was fine, and with what i found out with further testing today, Not fuel pump, filter or spark, seems to have me pointing at blocked fuel line or blocked where it leaves fuel tank to enter line.

Drain the tank and pull out the petcock and bushing.  Flush the tank and replace the bushing and maybe the petcock.  Replace all fuel line and fuel filter.  And for God's sake keep those vise grips in the toolbox.

Vice grips can EASILY put a crack in a fuel line that may not be obvious at first but could leak at a later time, especially in cold weather. Muy peligroso (unless your horse is feminine, then peligrosa)

 If you have an air compressor I’d try blowing air backwards through the fuel light and see if it bubbles in the tank. This may unclog the screen in the tank. Just a thought!

Does sound as if you are zeroing in on the problem --- but I feel I must make a comment on the 11.57 volts on the battery is NOT a fully charged battery, you should read around 13v +/- -usually 13+. So while you are messing with the fuel prob let that batt take some more charge.

It takes a battery charger producing 13.6 to 14.4 volts to fully charge the battery.  After charging, let the battery rest awhile and then take a reading.  11.57 volts is dead, not keeping a battery fully charged will destroy it.

again your comments are on time, just finished syphoning fuel from tank, when all your fuel cans are already full, (Winter preparedness!) and you need to dyphon a full tank, off to the store i go for a gas can that will be added to my collection!, watching gas going through syphon hose i was shocked at how dirty, including hunks of something!, tank is empty (‘cept for fumes!) additional removal is the Trac-Vac system that was on WH when i purchased it at auction( Trac-Vac was my reason for bidding on tractor) to have easier access to all i need to get at( line snd petcock) on fuel tank, would removal of tank make cleaning easier?, would like this tank CLEAN! Well, thats the anal in me😱, and just put some new fuel in and pour out till no more dirt?, Coming out of the 4th turn here, almost home, new issues await but one foot in front of the other is how i get home. lol

Removing the tank is best.  While the tank is out you will find plenty of debris that may be causing rust, so be prepared to clean and paint the metal parts that surrounded the tank.

 

I actually pull the tank on my fall cleanup tractor every year since the leaves and debris cannot be removed any other way.

I’ve seen that Battery Voltage Chart somewhere else in my lifetime lynnmor, The ‘70’s maybe every parts house or Garage in town seemed to have one hanging around.🙂

Funny how my 1st post was headed as “Throttle Problem”, and as it turns out problem was at completely other end of tractor! As i found out in a new hobby for me, old rules applied !! fuel line seemed blocked where it made its 1st 90 degree turn , about 2”” down from petcock, usually  always blocks up at direction change (90 degree is the worst ), petcock was clean inside, was the F’ing turn in hose run. guess it was a good time to change from front to back (fuel wise) Again thanks for sll your help, somehow i’ll pay it goward🙂

P,S- while working on fuel line replacement, found the dip stick for tranny looked odd, turns out housing for dipstick was broken at very bottom, last 2” of dipstick was bent (you guessed it!) 90 degrees!! good day for 90’s lol, are they easily avail? Cannot identify year of tractor cause Letters and Numbers of Model and Serial are faded to the point of GONE, hope thst does not affect much in the way of getting new ds and housing, what i took out today seems fused together, plastic and metal fused, go figure, i’ve said enough tonite.

Just a little housekeeping here. You said that your tractor is an 814-8. There was no correction anywhere in the thread, and as Wheel Horse does not have such a model, I assume that it was a typo. What is the correct model number?

Sorry for the typo, Tractor is a 414-8

Sirry for typo, Tractor is a 414-8, model or serial number has become faded to point of no possible reading of Model or Serial, any other things to look for on tractor that would help identify year since 414-8 is on tractor housing.
