ri702bill 8,323 #2 Posted December 3, 2022 (edited) Sad when skimping on the almighty buck blinds the vision of those who once brought us this far down the good road with a quality product. Seems to be "The Corporate Way".... "Cost Reductions" - how I learned to despise those words. The biggest slap in the puss was during one of my annual performance reviews. We were ALL told we had to turn in hard saving cost reductions that equaled the cost of what Corporate kicked in for my Family healthcare cost ($30K) - to "justify" our presence as an employee..... took me quite a few minutes to gather the words to finish the conversation with my Boss. I suspect that is a synthetic media in the newer filter. The early one is composite paper. Just because you can see light through it means not much. I posted that a couple weeks ago and that guy is misleading. To really see, it would have to run in the lab. I know there was less than a handful of filter media producers in the world. At least when I was involved with it there were less than 5. Most filter manufacturers spec the element and buy in bulk. One manufacture come to mind. The dreaded 4 letter word (around here) Fram. Fram sells a very high rated synthetic element filter. Where does it come from? It is like everything else. For instance, more than 50% of the bearings are manufactured in China. The tolerances and quality are both spot on now. They have really come a long way in manufacturing. Major bearing manufacturers are have their stuff made there. Very little environmental and labor issues. Not to mention the Chinese government strong arms manufactures to set up shop there, if they refuse, they will not be allowed to do business in China. Pretty big chip on the table. Like you said lots have bit the dust and more are coming. 1

I won't use an "F" word fram on anything. Haven't for decades. Wix. Hastings. Baldwin. But I don't know where any are produced now. At $20+ for an overseas made WIX 51410 I'm not likely to keep using them. That's a HUGE profit margin for someone other than me. 2
wh500special 2,184 #12 Posted December 4, 2022 (edited) FWIW I just bought a six pack of Honda oil filters for my cars and outboard. Stamped “made in USA” on them. This particular variation (“-A02”) is made by Honeywell and is apparently not as good as the prior version (“-A01”). But if it’s good enough for OEM it’s good enough for me. My point is that there are still USA made filters, sometimes in unexpected places. As an aside that I think is kind of fun, Honda uses the same spin-on oil filter pretty much across their entire line: cars, vans, SUV’s, outboards, small engines that are big enough to take a filter, power sports, etc. Convenient. It’s kind of small, but apparently meets the need well enough that its replacement is generally recommended only every other oil change…although who doesn’t also change the filter when already under there anyway? oliver2-44 9,755 #15 Posted December 6, 2022 So the dissertation on oil and filters posted by Wild Bill a few weeks ago ranked Ford Motorcraft filter very highly. So is there a Motorcraft filter that would replace the Wix 51040?

Yes, search Wild Bills thread and open the oil bible there is a filter testing sectional “motor Oil Testing”. Sadly it confirms what the above video is saying.
