How do I remove gas tank on GT 14?

Recommended Posts

Looks like I have a slow leak in the plastic gas tank on my GT 14. This is the later model with solid front grill. I removed the metal shield between tank and motor. Can also remove air cleaner manifold if needed BUT...

I cant see whats holding the tank in place. There is a wire type of holder around the front and side of tank but the tank seems to be held in somehow. I can wiggle it but cannot pull it up or back.

What am I missing???

There is a steel strap, maybe 1/2” wide that holds it down.  The screw holding the band together should be on the top, under the grille.

Mine seems to be missing the strap. There is an indent in top of the plastic that looks like where the strap should go but no strap on mine...

Seems to be held at the bottom but I can't see any way it would be secured??

There is a wire type of holder around the sides but nothing to indicate whats holding the tank in.

Anybody else have a different attachment than the strap on top?

If all else fails, there are two bolts going up from the bottom into the rear of the grille, and two bolts going through the frame with nuts on them that hood the base plate in.

The base plate has weld nuts.  I figured I’d explain that :handgestures-thumbupright:

There were two types of hold downs. The wide strap around the tank and the wire with a spring. Base plate I believe is the same. I have both if you need something. I’ll see if I can find a picture. Best thing to do is remove the grill and then you can clean out everything under and behind tank. Two bolts under the front and then the top two screws holding the long rails on the sides. Watch your feet when doing this. Don’t ask me how I know. 😁

So I managed to remove the grill today and yes there are 2 bolts up under the grill and the 2 bolts at the top rail. However, this model with the wire cage also has the base plate of the gas tank / wire cage with 2 bolts going down into the frame. Once those are removed the whole tank assembly comes out with the grill. Just an FYI for anyone with that set up. I have the tank sitting on paper towel now trying to determine the location of leak. Tank really looks fine. May be as simple as the shut off valve....

Thanks for all the suggestions!

Also check the outlet nipple for cracks that could leak when you have the hoses tugging on it.

Since I have the tank out, does anyone have suggestion for something to coat the tank with as a preventative for future leaks?

Or best to just use it as is and keep fingers crossed...

Hard to coat it since it’s plastic. It’s actually a pretty thick piece. If you found a pinhole or crack, you could try plastic welding it. I have used a large soldering iron and clear zip ties before. Search youtube for plastic repair.

The tank and nipple appear to be solid with no cracks or leaks. The 1/4 inch hose coming off the nipple had a pretty old clamp so I think it was actually seeping there. Replaced the hose, clamp, shut off valve and used all new clamps. Looks good so far!

The base plate for the tank (with the wire holders) actually has the welded bolts attached to it. They fit through the base of the grill then through the frame (FYI for anyone with that set up). Tank, base plate and grill all go back on at the same time.

That grill is a beast!
