1975 C160 Automatic Restoration

We are trying Aircraft Remover  to try to get the baked on super hard paint off the cylinder head

Just give it a light coat of aluminum paint and install it. You don't need to fill up that new building with incomplete projects.:ychain:

I ASSURE you that will not happen. 

 

I don't want to add paint to the head.  

If that was the acceptable form I would have already done it.

Your the Dremel expert order up those wool polishing pads and some metal polish.  Around 35 to 40 dollars worth from Amazon and polish it to a high gloss . Then take it out in the snow and get water spot all over it.

We want you to be happy.

Trina got the seat pan ready for paint today. 

Removed the original 1974 rear light. Cute little round push/turn bulb 💡 in it. 

She hammer and dollied several areas to get it close to straight. 

Then she spent some time hand sanding the whole thing and cleaning it up with acetone.

In the reassembly department she put the hydraulic cylinder and brake/neutral pedal on.

I got the engine drive pulley off. 

Removed the flywheel screen using the AWESOME new manual impact driver o got today. 

 

 

Also pulled the flywheel and cleaned the block a little.

Note the little nests between every magnet.

Now EB before you start heavy handed cleaning, you know there are little round aluminum tube spacers between those magnets-

No sir I did not know that!

First time I've seen those used.  

 

These are clearly made into little paper wasp or other insect nests.

The Paint Department has been working on this hood off and on.

Several coats of filler primer after the body filler was put on.

Maybe three coats? Of the white primer.

A little sanding with 400 to 600 grit paper in between a bunch of that.

For her first attempt ever at body work I'd say this borders on stellar. She's a super happy girl.

I *used* to have one of those- it's one of those tools that "grew legs" and left my shop at some point.... :crying-green:  I think I'll buy another one. They aren't that expensive, and when you need one, you need it bad.

I've only used mine this one time so take this recommendation with a grain of salt.

I was very careful to choose a known name brand which I do a fair amount of the time but not always.

Knowing this is a tool that is a little tough on itself just in standard usage I wanted something that had a good reputation.

 

What I bought specifically is a Lisle  30750.

They sell two. This is the heavier of the two and also the less expensive.

I got it locally and it was around $44. They can be had for a couple bucks cheaper online.

I went and looked at my impact it's a Vessel I bought some time in the 60's . I think it came from the first Northern Tool Store in Charlotte.

We appreciate the kind words!

 

After this one's done Trina will choose what tractor of hers comes in the shop and for level of work.

The hood is done as much we'll do...for now.   

Trina's still picking out spots she wouldn't mind fixing but it isn't a show tractor. It's immediately being put to work plowing snow.

Trina put 4 good strong coats of Rust-O-leum 2X Red Oxide Primer on the rear fender/ seat pan. That'll dry overnight or more then she'll sand it off and paint it red.

As for the cylinder head which had absolutely HARD BAKED on paint...

We are only able to remove so much because the aluminum itself is stained.

Without getting into a bead blaster  (I can see that being in our arsenal of tools but not yet)  we opted to put a VERY thin coat of flat black high heat paint on it.

The transmission pump may get the exact same treatment.

Looks real nice!

 

I've painted Kohler heads many times before. One light coat to to "slick" it and prevent it corroding won't hurt anything.

I thought about going with off-white like the rest of the engine. 

I chose black for two reasons. 

It covers far better. 

Black will dissipate the heat slightly better than white.

That's true, but the heat is coming from the inside.

So a black head will “draw” more heat from the cylinder ? Which will then dissipate through the cooling fins ?…

I don't think there would be much difference, but the white paint might not dissipate heat as quick.
