There is little difference between most colors but black is the color that BOTH absorbs AND dissipates the most heat. 37 minutes ago, Horse Newbie said: I thought black absorbed heat and white repelled heat… Interesting research... Kirchhoff's law: "For an arbitrary body emitting and absorbing thermal radiation in thermodynamic equilibrium, the emissivity is equal to the absorptivity." White will repel heat the most and it will hold it the most when the source of heat is gone. 1
wallfish 17,009 #202 Posted December 31, 2022 It ain't gonna make 1 iota of difference whatever color is on that head. Paint away in my opinion as will not cause any problems with cooling on a small engine. The convection heat will still easily dissipate. What could the "r-value" of paint be? 1 millionth of 1 degree? Here's an interesting article from the aircraft industry which would definitely be interested in ANY tiny degree of cooling or heating properties of anything on their engines. https://www.avweb.com/ownership/improving-engine-cooling-by-painting/ 3
SylvanLakeWH 25,596 #203 Posted December 31, 2022 No expert, but I think @wallfish is correct. I wouldn't expect any difference in heating / cooling given the minimal surface area we're talking about... regardless, I would think less coats of any color would equal cooler... even if minimal...
ebinmaine 67,562 #204 Posted December 31, 2022 @wallfish Very interesting read. Thanks for posting. I agree that the color would make little to no difference in heat to my case. Dark color was chosen just because it would cover the staining of another dark color. It would be a very interesting experiment to use an infrared thermometer on a well thought out trial to see the actual temps. 54 minutes ago, SylvanLakeWH said: I would think less coats of any color would equal cooler... even if minimal... Agreed here as well. I'm not sure if the pic shows it well ... The black isn't even covering all the maroon. Look deep in the fins. But at least it's dark to dark so it blends in for the most part. If/when I get a sand/bead blaster it could be cleaned up.

kpinnc 12,078 #207 Posted December 31, 2022 (edited) Regardless of which color dissipates better, black high temp paint seems to hold up better than anything else. Every silver or light color I've used tends to discolor over time. One more thing: every manufacturer on earth sprayed these complete engines with thier paint. Either because they didn't care or because paint made a negligable difference in performance- and these engines keep going 50+ years later. I don't see it as an issue. Just my opinion. ebinmaine 67,562 #209 Posted December 31, 2022 I was able to get one of the axle keyway grooves cut. Could be a hair tighter up n down but it'll do just fine. The black marker line is the final length. I'll cut it off later. I'm leaving it long because it's easier to handle. To get the curve line right I lined up a cutting wheel and traced a marker line into the key stock. Then ground the key. Here's the old grinding wheel on top of a new one after doing some experimental cutting and making 3 full grooves. While I did that BBT took a couple things off the K341. Earlier today The Paint Department was at it again. The rear fender seat pan is now red.
8ntruck 7,014 #210 Posted January 1, 2023 Got any shim stock that you could use to fill up the extra up and down space? Would be some extra bullet proofing....

ebinmaine 67,562 #212 Posted January 6, 2023 (edited) The BBT and I been ridiculously busy the last few days but we've done a little here n there. Trina finished cleaning up the engine oil pan this evening. She also started cleaning up the outside of the transmission fluid pump. I finished up the 2nd axle keyway groove and cleaned the differential for assembly. This pic shows all the components of a 5071 10 pinion Limited Slip Differential with steel endplates. We should be about ready to assemble the transuhmasshion and make us a rolling chassis. Edited January 6, 2023 by ebinmaine 4

That's a terrific picture of the differential. Please add to your post ( for folks using the search box) that its a 5071 LSD with steel endplates (5060 if aluminum) Definitely some wear on those pinions but nothing serious. FYI @JimSraj Edited January 6, 2023 by Handy Don

FYI @JimSraj Added that. That wear line is the coloration where the spring was riding. The wear itself is negligible. I believe this was the diff from the 70 Charger but can't be sure.

If you happen to go past a GRAINGER store on your travels you could puck up some 1/4" X 5/16" key-stock and adjust the fit as needed.

Well considering I work almost across the street from one I'll bet I could find some of that size key stock fairly well. 👍
Lee1977 6,663 #217 Posted January 6, 2023 That finish product that you promised us by years end, your over schedule 6 days,. We will give you till tomorrow, after that you have to pay a plentily. I'll watch for a dollar a day others may not be so generous. At your rate of completion I might be able to afford a new set of tires.

ebinmaine 67,562 #225 Posted January 12, 2023 I did some experimentation with a different way of cutting the axle shaft keyways. No pics yet as I've yet to perfect the method. A note to folks on the O rings at the plugs on the hydro pump. They're a normal 13/16 outside diameter and... NOT a standard hardware store O ring from the plumbing section. Sundstrand appears to use a Hydraulics Industry Standard MORB Male O Ring Boss. The size is between the plumbing Standards of 1/16 and 3/32.
