ebinmaine 67,560 #76 Posted December 8, 2022 Finished with transmission disassembly this evening. Got the axles out and differential set aside. Most bearings are in good shape. I did find the cause of the metal pieces/chunks being in the bottom of the case. Bad bearing... Note the missing cage side. The (thrust?) washer that rides on it has a bit of scuffing but appears usable. On the plus side I have 2 good used bearings setting in the case that came out of the 1970 Charger Hydro project that was parted out. In between fiddlin' around with the transuhmasshion I popped the carb and fuel pump off. Set them aside. Trina's fun for the couple hours was experimenting with a hammer and dolly set. The hood has a good selection of dings n dents. She's been smashing crashing and bashing to flattenize them. After that she used a semi flexible sanding block with 240 grit sandpaper to scuff off the top of the paint. Kind of get a feel for where things are. It was quite well orange peeled in some places. Also let's her see the highs and lows. 3 4
ebinmaine 67,560 #77 Posted December 9, 2022 We have a Husky brand spray paint gun that was given to us a year or three ago. Never been used. The Paint Department is gonna give it a shot sometime so I picked up a regulator and water separator. Got these LED replacement 194/168 bulbs. Taillight for sure. Maybe other auxiliary lights. Trina spent more time clanging on the hood. The top was made better the other day. This evening the front cross bars are much straighter. I found a socket and the right length of extensions for use as an arbor in the HF 20 ton press to push out the bad roller bearing. We both carefully and slowly checked the bearings in the old case I had from the Charger. 2 of 2 bearings felt good. I used one of them in this C160 case. Pressed right in beautifully. After that I spent some time cleaning and scraping the old gasket off the case halves. Used a piece of 120 grit sandpaper to smooth out the surface. Laid out the gasket material so it'll set flat til I get to making the new one. Here's the ¼" square stock for the full length key.... Inventory at work the next two days. Hopefully I'll have time to get something done. Either way, Trina will. 🙂 4

The Paint Department is gonna give it a shot sometime so I picked up a regulator and water separator. If this is her first time spraying with a gun may I suggest some practice. You have picked a complex part for a first spray, it has flat, vertices and upside down surfaces. Get some large cardboard and practice painting it. Also some scrap angle iron or 2x4 to simulate the parts your painting. Since your boy paint large sheet metal Adjust your spray fan width To a medium narrower width then adjust your trigger pull so your not putting out so much paint at the narrower width. I like to do 3 coats. 1 a light tack coat, 2 a almost full coverage coat in a cross wide direction and 3 a final full coverage coat going the long direction of the part. Let each coat dry to a tacky / not wet state before the next coat. When spraying I half lap each pass. With your practice painting if your getting orange peel after the 2nd or 3rd coat add a little more thinner to the paint so the spray droplets will lay down /flow together. I’ll encourage you to use some enamel hardener in your paint. Also have a small 2/2” or 2” paint brush ready if you get a run. I dip the brush in thinner, wipe it half dry the lightly brush out run. Brush is also good to hand paint those backside of small surfaces the spray can’t get to because you spray is straight line,it doesn’t go around corners. Who am I kidding, I’m no expert- go watch some YouTube videos 13 hours ago, ebinmaine said: 3 1
ebinmaine 67,560 #82 Posted December 10, 2022 Fair amount of fun today. We moved the stand up drill press out of the basement and to the barn. Moved my biggest bench vise from a high mount on one bench to a low mount across the room where the drill press was. I used the HF 20 ton press to remove the hub from the other axle. Got the 10 pinion Limited Slip Differential apart so I could inspect it. I'll use the longer axles that were with the LSD for a slightly wider rear stance. Trina was slinging paint out of a rattle can off n on all day. The frame and steering tower is done. @WHX?? Lookitt this RED!! Hoping tomorrow I'll get a minute to try to cut grooves in the axles. 1
Handy Don 12,233 #83 Posted December 10, 2022 Are those differential end plates heavily scored by the pinions or is that just "brushed" surface?

Oh I'm sure they're scored some. They only ride in one place. 1 hour ago, WHX?? said: ' Bout freaking time you took off those rose colored glasses!!! Best to learn a gun on more even metal.

Randy It does give a fresh clean straight metal surface, yes. The axles are identical but for length. The ones in the OE transmission are 11-3/4". I'll have to check to see what axles I have available. I think I'll use a 12-1/2" and a 13"+ Another added benefit is that the hub has no chance to contact the trans case with the longer axles. This eliminates possibility of the seal being destroyed by the hub.

ebinmaine 67,560 #100 Posted December 12, 2022 Quite a bit of cleaning and scraping and cleaning and painting done today. Lots of wire brushing and sanding. Again we have a Wheelhorse hanging mobile. Transmission case is painted. Before. After. Here's a good pair of pics that shows the work Trina did on the hood. Note the spacing between the cross bars. Dents and warpage. Here she's most done. Spacing is even. I ordered hoses and more from Lowell... ...and an engine gasket set from isavetractors. 5
