Once I saw one in an old old mansion that was being demolished that had the compressor in the basement, refrigerant lines running up to the kitchen to the 'ice box'. I believe that one was Ammonia... It was a shame that they demolished that house, it was really a thing of beauty. Some big wig industrialist had it built in the 20s / 30s in Colts Neck, NJ.
