V belt size confirmation on 2 stage snowblower

Recommended Posts

Panther416-8

Anyone have a 2 stage blower (79361) that can confirm the belt size. It's a 1995 and the schematic indicates a part 116332 which comes up as a 5/8 × 65" belt. I only ask because the belt that is on there as I received the blower is a 1/2" v belt but same length.  With the 1/2" the belt when seated in the pullies it is about 1/8" below the pulley edge and with the new 5/8" belt it is about flush.

I don't have a dual stage, but that 1/2" belt looks too narrow for the pulley.  I would be concerned it will bottom out in the pulley.    The 5/8 looks correct for the pulley.

The pulley should be cleaned before it is used.

the 5/8 width belt would be the right one!

The 5/8" belt will get sucked into the groove when it is under load but we don't normally get to see that.

:text-yeahthat:    And that is the reason that pulley should be cleaned and smoothed up before using.         When the belt enters and exits the pulley under load, any roughness on the pulley will quickly wear the fabric in the sides of the belt as it is pulled in and out of the vee.

@Ed Kennell  your belt  function  detailing is exactly the common issue to pulleys / bearing issues , when you have any related  roughness / noise  in your  belt drives , all related parts need a look over and probable service . another thing about belt drives is their  part in a , hi stress / hi heat  zone. until  , I  went after every rotational  related part , noise and  roughness  remained .  that led me to my ( correct lubrication  addiction  ) . my mule drive bearings were , very hot , rough , wrong original grease ,  that 560 deg  rated  grease , is amazingly  quiet and smooth ,  still marvel  at how easily  a  pto drive can engage and  activate a mower deck ,  its the simple details that are  frequently overlooked  ,  go greasy , pete

Thanks all on the confirmation of the belt size. I will give the pulley grooves a good cleaning. I used a needle attachment on my grease gun for the first time and was able to grease the pulley bearings with ease. Almost ready to mount the blower, just need to add my rubber impeller extensions.

The key is smoothness of the surface. Wirebrush will remove rust but not make it smooth. You need abrasives in successive grits down to about 400 on a spinning pulley.

My go-to is a v-tapered stick wrapped in abrasive paper with the pulley chucked into strapped-down electric drill (and the rotation pulling the stick away from me).

Good luck :)
