A Wisconsin V4 is known as durable and power level given the size is plentiful.  

 

I've considered them multiple times for a Horse but never had the chance.

It might be top out at 200 if it doesn't run but still a gamble. 

If it is a Wisconsin 4  lunger they were the motor. Parts should be around for it yet.

Only had one experience with one of those and it ended badly. Broken housing at the cam gear. But I got to remember, nothing easy show up here. 

Ended up replacing the Winny with a 35 hp Briggs. It ran a small skid loader. 

If your into nestalgia or got a machine that is missing the OE engine for a resto,  it might be a good buy, I just think there are better choices, especially if you can test run them first.

@WHX?? the engine is model mvh4d, so yes a V4. Agreed on the gamble, that's exactly what I told the seller. We'll see how much he wants to come down, if any.

Should sound interesting with individual exhausts me thinks..

 

@JoeM yikes, that sounds bad.

It's not that I need this engine, it popped up and I have never seen one (I'm from the Netherlands). 

Secondhand engines with less horsepower (18-25hp) from B&S, Honda or Kawasaki go for about $1000 to $1500.

I have operated a fair amount of Bob Cat skid loaders that have had Wisconsin V4's in them. They were popular and good strong engines in their day. On that note, I will say that there are not a large amount of these skid loaders still in use today. One other note Wisconsin engines were bought out by Fuji/Subaru or "Robin small engines"  who completely discontinued small air cooled engines in 2017. Parts are still available, but not abundant.

Not being able to hear it run I'm rethinking maybe E 1- 150 tops Mark. I guess I'm just not a gambler. With your skills tho and what you mentioned I don't think you would have a problem getting it to run. These motors are a kin to our beloved K series in that it doesn't take much to get them huffin rod or crank issues aside. 

On the up side I tied into a V-4 years ago. Can't remember the model but it was crank start with a magneto and had a gear reduction with a manual clutch. It was nasty looking but cleaned up nice and when I popped the heads the bores looked immaculate so I buttoned it back up and it fired on the second crank.

Customer put it on a home made dirt shredder made out of a manure spreader ... no lie... sure wished we had phone cams back then!

@Achto that the engines were in the Bobcats in the first place would suggest that they are rugged engins. However no engine gets better from sitting under a tarp for a few years, no matter how rugged the engine.

 

Did'nt know that Robin/Subaru bought Wisconsin. I managed to source some parts for my Robin DY41D of the 512-D so i'm not too worried about parts availability (yet).

I worked on a few old hay bailers that had independent 2cyl or 4 cyl Wisconsin engines years ago.  They sure could break your wrist if you weren't careful hand cranking and they back fired.

Those old V4 Wisconsons are interesting engines.  Used in a lot of industrial applications.

 

My C-195 is likely to need a new engine someday.  One of those V4's would look cool in that application.

I know the old engine was setting in the scrap pile. There was a guy here buying some WH parts and his co pilot seen it and gave me $40 for the carcass. I remember cause I bought a bottle of crown and went to the boat club and drank it with the owner of the skid steer.

Your answer to "2"  is fairly easy.

- tractor (obviously)

- woodsaw (buzz saw)

- generator (bit boring)

- log splitter (overkill much?)

Do I need it? No..

Could I make use of it? Yes

Will I have happy neighbours if I do? Prolly not

 

Air compressor and waterpump I already have electrical powered versions of. Both fulfill my needs.
