Here's what I use...

 

A small board hooked to the edge of the bucket near the wire that has the 'rolling can' smeared with Peanut Butter.

 

Only need two inches or so of used anti-freeze in the bottom.

 

Reminds me... I need to clean mine out, there's a few in there that have been getting 'pickled' for a couple weeks now...

It's what she can't help NOT doing...

 

She has the terrier reflex of biting everything and shaking it but unfortunately is not able to exhibit any control or choice. 

She's not aggressive. She's intensely reactive.

We've had her tested multiple times.

We've had multiple professionals try to help.

Trina is quite the dog whisperer herself.

This dog is just... Not set up quite right. 

 

Around home with humans larger than about 10 years old she's probably the best dog I've ever had.

 

 

So last fall we came to the unfortunate conclusion that she will no longer be allowed out in public unless we honestly believe close  proximity to other animals is nearly impossible. 

 

Sucks. 

But it is what it is.....

Try using the same bucket and same water but no rolling tube. No Bait at the top.

Normally we put the bucket out near a stone wall. Prop a stick from a rock over to the top of the bucket. Maybe another stick going across the top.

Cover the surface of the fluid that you use with a thin coat of black oil sunflower seeds.

Rodents have poor, if any, depth perception and they can see and smell the seeds but not understand how far down they are.

They jump in to get the seeds but obviously can't reach the stick to get back out....

Have you priced BOSS lately?  OMG, they have doubled in price in a year, and a bit before that.

 

Used to pay about 45 cents a pound or so, it's up to $1.00 a pound, and more.

 

I'm not wasting any...  the one I use works just fine!   Used anti-freeze is in abundance and free.

I picked up a few tecumseh h60 engines over the years for parts to keep my 603 running and almost every one of them had a mouse nest in the engine shroud and the bottoms were rotted out because of the mouse piss. The other place that I’ve had them several times is between the gas tank and dash as stated above by someone else. This usually ends up with chewed wires.

 Rats can be the problem here. Property behind me and the one next to that used to keep birds. Parrots etc. Also put loads of scraps out for the wild life. No birds now apart from a duck. But still loads of food on and around the bird table. 

 I now have a bait box by one of the sheds. Has holes in either end and two spikes inside. The bait I use is in a block with holes through to push down on the spikes. Not seen any rats for a while now.

One of my boiler parts suppliers was in the heart of the city of Rochester NY. They had those bait boxes all over the place. One right by the front door. One time I went there and there was a rat sticking out the opening. six weeks later the same rat still in there!

Yep, feeding the varmints is a big no no. It just leads to problems. Up north where I live we don’t have rats but chippys, squirrel, coon and bear. 😜

I used a clothes hanger wire with a 20oz soda bottle with a hole drilled in the center of cap and bottom of bottle. Two holes at the top of bucket for the wire to go through. Smear with a little peanut butter and 6” of water in bucket and can use the sunflower seeds if you like but I’ve found they love that peanut butter and will crawl out onto the bottle where it spins and dumps them in.

Yeah if it’s winter but usually they move indoors somewhere by then. I get em before they hunker down for the winter. Before you could hear them in the ceiling rolling acorns around. Would drive me crazy.
