418C Front Axle ?

Recommended Posts

I read some where that the 418C came with an upgraded front end.  Is this what they meant?

Those are the heavy duty spindles available in that era.

I have a set on one of the 417As here as well. I'm under the impression they're a dealer installed option on the tractor I have.

Does not show as an option for the 418-C so likely standard equipment for them.

They do show something different for the 416-x and different again for the 300-Series.

The HD front axle kit 8-0491 and 8-0493 optional for the 416

Cool, did not know this was a factory HD option. My 512-D seems to have this option aswell.

Probably to lug around all the weight of the Robin engine :P

Those are the kits that came complete with the reinforced spindles and a new set of tires mounted to rims.  I think one had the linen beige wheels and the other gray.

this was referenced recently in another thread.  Edit:

@grinchsr if you didn’t notice it, your 418-C is also faster than other Wheel Horses.    It had a different gear set on the hydro motor.  Might also check your rear wheels to see if they are chrome under the gray paint…apparently leftover/blemished 420-LSE wheels got repurposed into some 418-C’s.

Thanks for the replies guys.  Steve I did notice that it seemed pretty quick compared to my other hydro’s. I know I am going to enjoy this tractor.

For sure.  It’s a one owner machine with all the manual’s.  The owner was an engineer for the Marlin gun company.

The 418-C has the reinforced spindle and a longer spindle length to accommodate the larger bearings that the 418-C has.

The 418-C was made for commercial lawn services and is a good deal faster than the 418-A. I've had mine a few years and it is my go-to snow mover.

Those spindles were a Dealer Installed option on the C-175 BlackHood I got, with the front end loader option too.  I have seen a Service/Owners/Parts Manual in the Library, although I can't be sure of the Literature number on it.

Thanks Jay.  It will be getting Lucas red as soon as I take it apart and clean it up.   I know it will be needing a lower shaft bushing.

@ebinmaine  couple of years back , picked up a 3-14-8 , very low hours , but really thrashed , was going to try and bring it back , but it was so butchered , decided to let it go , money pit , the one very  good thing left on it was the front axel , close to pristine , no wear / rust or abuse , swapped that out to my  c-85 , gave it the total lucas go over , works like a new axel . pete

Hi Eric.  No it’s the rear steering block the bronze bushing.  Pretty much every machine I have picked up needs that bushing.

Oh oh oh oh oh.

Yeah. Us too. I don't really have any way to change those yet so we just look for a better block.
