Kohler 17hp twin… series 1 or 2?

AHS

The engine tin have “series 11”, but it has a coil. I thought the only series 11 were magnum?   Is it series 1 or 11? Sorry, I couldn’t get the picture to load

Does it have an oil filter?  That is what I’ve gathered is an easy way to tell Series 1 and 2 apart.

Series II were built with AND without oil filters.

Kt is a K-series twin cylinder

Mt would be a magnum-series but that did not happen

M18 was the next twin

One can add an oil filter to a Series II if the block off plate is removable.

How would a filter work on a splash lubricated engine?  How would the oil be pushed through the filter?

I'm pretty sure that the KT series II engines are full pressure oil systems.  The KT steries I engines had a drip oiling system for the big ends of the rods with an oil pump pumping the oil to the crankshaft journals and through the camshaft that has the 'drip ports' to distribute the oil to the rods.  The series II engines added oil passages in the crank to oil the rods.

Hunter at ARC Racing once told me that some people run scavenge pumps on their small engines with remote, inline oil filter. (obviously, after pumping out of the engine, going through the SP, through the filter, the engine would have to be tapped somewhere for a return line).

 

Dunno if that helps... but I have considered installing such a system in my own K341 engine... :eusa-think:

Ok, I went this morning and got a series 2 Kohler 17 for $30!!!!!😀 it has an occasional backfire at full throttle. I’m going to adjust the valves? He said he messed with the points and cleaned the carb. I’m going to change the oil, replace points, condenser, coil and adjust the valves.

Unfortunately, to adjust those they need to be ground.  The tappets are not adjustable.

Hmmm... "messed with" is not a term I would use to describe adjusting the points.  Sounds like a hacker term.  I would adjust them with a timing light.

I'd recommend ACTUALLY cleaning the carb the right way too. 

Remove. SOAK.   Reassemble.

What is your carb soaking liquid, there Eric? Got something special fa' 'dat?

 

I've been looking for a good soaking liquid lately... didn't think Epsom salt was a good option... :hide:

i was told this design feature ( see photo ) was a distinguishing factor that indicates the kohler is Series 2 ??? Yes/no?

 

Absent that then its supposedly Series 1 ????????

there was a Youtube i saw a yr or 2 ago with Kohler 17 engine completely apart and actually showed the holes in the Series 2 crank where engine was redesigned so oil would circulate -- thats what i think i see in the diagrams shown earlier in the thread posted by ACHTO

@Brockport Bill That 'cover' piece - or lack of - is the way I've always used to tell which is which. Cause the series 1 does not have it.

Yep, that's what I use. Just make sure that you have any rubber seals removed from the carb, cause it will dissolve them.
