Jeff-C175 7,202 #1 Posted November 11, 2022 (edited) Heard this LOUD BOOM! Something either fell on, or ran into, the house! Ran outside... at first didn't see anything, but came around the corner and there on the ground... "Been dazed and confused ..." Laying on it's side, motionless. Thought it was dead. Nudged it with my foot and rolled it upright. Not dead! And NOT happy! Slowly becoming more alert and aware that some big goofy human was shoving a camera in it's face: Kept messing with him some more, and he stood up with his wing out. Thought it was broken... Nudged his wing with my foot and he folded it in and stood up straight. Really alert now, but apparently not sure What the Hawk had just happened to him! Started stomping my foot around him to see if he would fly... and he DID! Up to a tree branch where he sat for another half hour or so regaining his composure, and finally flew away. I believe he was chasing a bird and understeered a bit and crashed into the picture window on the side of the house. I'm real glad now that I had tempered glass installed a few years back, because he would have been IN the house! Excellent job on the photographs and thank you very much for sharing them with the group.

Glad to see he was all right though he probably won't come near your house an time soon! We live in the woods and have some large clerestory windows in the living room. Several times a month a bird will knock itself silly by flying into a window, guess they think they can fly right through. 3
peter lena 8,631 #6 Posted November 11, 2022 @Jeff-C175 agree with the pictures , had a lot of birds hit the house and picture window , usually r elated to berry tree , alcohol , overload . but that is past now , so it could have been a missed kill shot , and hit the house . pete 5

WHX?? 48,818 #8 Posted November 11, 2022 With the right lighting they see reflections of trees and landscape in the window and think they can fly into it. That's why it's unwise to put feeders close to picture windows. Glad to hear he survived his mishap.
Pullstart 62,897 #9 Posted November 11, 2022 Cool stuff Dave! I tried on Wednesday to get some good footage, but there was a crow in town with only one leg. It was hopping around, pecking at things, and even flew away and landed on a light post. It didn’t seem to bother any.

Would it be helpful to hang streamers or the like near a habitual offending winder’?
pacer 3,171 #11 Posted November 11, 2022 My rather large den has four 4'by7' thick mirrowed windows (see out , but in sunlight cant see in) and with the mirrows reflecting the forest behind my house, I have had many a collision over the years. The amazing thing is that probably 90% of the crashes lie limp on the deck and appearing dead, sometimes for several hrs, and they eventually get their little brain unscrambled off they go!

Maybe... but I don't think the Treasurer would approve of the 'decoration'. I have read that it's the 'reflection' thing that @pacer mentioned that causes them to run into glass. Supposedly there are products on the web that you can apply to the windows that is invisible to human eyes, but causes a large UV reflection that birds can see. I might look into that. Looks like your streamer idea has some favor with Audobon. They suggest hanging paracord in front of the window. Yeah... I dunno if I like that idea myself though. https://pa.audubon.org/conservation/protecting-birds-striking-glass-windows

Thanks, we built the house about ten years ago. My wife fell in love with the mountain chalet look so that was the inspiration. Being in the woods it is hard to get a good picture from the outside. Can't even see it when leaves are on the trees. Edited November 12, 2022 by 953 nut fat finger 2

We found the same thing here at work. My warehouse was having a starling and pigeon infestation which proves very messy as you can imagine. Decoys were placed in different areas and they made about as much difference as wishing the birds weren't there. 1
Mickwhitt 4,626 #20 Posted November 11, 2022 We have Kestrels in abundance on the fields opposite our home. So good to wath them hover motionless as they hunt for prey, before diving down like a dive bomber. Caught this one perching in an oak tree after a hunting session. So beautiful but we have problems with game keepers poisoning birds of prey to protect the game birds they breed for shooting. 1
sjoemie himself 3,068 #21 Posted November 11, 2022 (edited) Had kinda the same situation few weeks ago.. was watching some tv downstairs and heard a gigantic bang! At first I thought the wind slammed a door shut upstairs. Went to check it out and found a greasy imprint of a pigeon on one of the upstairs windows. Went back down again to check if it rolled of the roof and sure enough, there it was. Unfortunately though it had to much speed while trying to fly through the window and by the looks of it broke it's neck in the proces.. buried it in the backyard.
