I was blessed to be able to 'save' him and get his mug shots.

Not sure what would have happened if I had not 'righted' him.  Would he have perished if I hadn't nudged him to 'come to' ya think?

Most likely it would have been fine after it woke up and shook itself out for a bit. Birds are pretty resilient.

Excellent job on the photographs and thank you very much for sharing them with the group.

Up to a tree branch where he sat for another half hour or so regaining his composure,

No doubt he knocked himself out. Glad to see he was all right though he probably won't come near your house an time soon!

We live in the woods and have some large clerestory windows in the living room. Several times a month a bird will knock itself silly by flying into a window, guess they think they can fly right through.

@Jeff-C175  agree with the pictures , had a lot of birds hit the house and picture window , usually r elated to berry  tree  , alcohol , overload . but  that is past now , so it could have been a missed kill shot , and hit the house . pete

We live in the forest and see these Cooper's Hawks on a very regular basis. Your answer was my first thought as well.

WHX??

With the right lighting they see reflections of trees and landscape in the window and think they can fly into it.

That's why it's unwise to put feeders close to picture windows.

Glad to hear he survived his mishap.

Cool stuff Dave!

I tried on Wednesday to get some good footage, but there was a crow in town with only one leg.  It was hopping around, pecking at things, and even flew away and landed on a light post.  It didn’t seem to bother any.

Would it be helpful to hang streamers or the like near a habitual offending winder’?

My rather large den has four 4'by7' thick mirrowed windows (see out , but in sunlight cant see in) and with the mirrows reflecting the forest behind my house, I have had many a collision over the years. The amazing thing is that probably 90% of the crashes lie limp on the deck and appearing dead, sometimes for several hrs, and they eventually get their little brain unscrambled off they go!

Maybe... but I don't think the Treasurer would approve of the 'decoration'.

I have read that it's the 'reflection' thing that @pacer mentioned that causes them to run into glass.  Supposedly there are products on the web that you can apply to the windows that is invisible to human eyes, but causes a large UV reflection that birds can see.  I might look into that.

Looks like your streamer idea has some favor with Audobon.  They suggest hanging paracord in front of the window.  Yeah... I dunno if I like that idea myself though.

My wife put an owl and two eagles in the front windows and duck decoys in the back widows, didn't seem to help.      :confusion-shrug:

Thanks, we built the house about ten years ago. My wife fell in love with the mountain chalet look so that was the inspiration. Being in the woods it is hard to get a good picture from the outside. Can't even see it when leaves are on the trees.

We found the same thing here at work. My warehouse was having a starling and pigeon infestation which proves very messy as you can imagine.

Decoys were placed in different areas and they made about as much difference as wishing the birds weren't there.

We have Kestrels in abundance on the fields opposite our home. So good to wath them hover motionless as they hunt for prey,  before diving down like a dive bomber.

20221011_101728.jpg.468c86ff3bdb4d97c7d8c82e8c1a85cd.jpgCaught this one perching in an oak tree after a hunting session.

So beautiful but we have problems with game keepers poisoning birds of prey to protect the game birds they breed for shooting.

Had kinda the same situation few weeks ago.. was watching some tv downstairs and heard a gigantic bang! At first I thought the wind slammed a door shut upstairs.

Went to check it out and found a greasy imprint of a pigeon on one of the upstairs windows.

Went back down again to check if it rolled of the roof and sure enough, there it was.

Unfortunately though it had to much speed while trying to fly through the window and by the looks of it broke it's neck in the proces.. buried it in the backyard.
