What is correct shroud on top of K-321 engine?

Recommended Posts

Sailman

I have a GT 14 with the Kohler K-321 14 HP motor that came missing the TOP shroud that covers the head. My 12 HP and 16 HP kohlers all have a 1/2 shroud that covers half of the head. Confused because I see other pictures of K-321 and K-301 top shrouds that cover the whole engine.

First picture below is an actual GT 14 with K-321. Second picture is my C-120 with the K-301. Third is another picture of one from a K-301.

Seems best to have one to keep the head cool with air off the blower.

Are they interchangeable? Preference of one over the other?

I'm confused....

Great question! I too have a mix of full and half shrouds on different years of Kohlers.

I suspect the parts manuals should identify the correct part using the spec number

Heads are different. Some have head bolt bosses that are high which use the shroud in your first picture. The heads with the lower boss use the other 2. Heads interchange with each other so it's easy to have a tractor with a different looking set up than what it came with originally. If your going for originality, best to look at pics of your model to see what it was supposed to have.

This is a low boss head. Notice the flats of the bolt holes are below the fins.

My Power King uses this head.

Most starter genny models used the high boss head for the genny bracket

Thanks for the clear up squonk ( I don't know how to get the hyperlink name in ).

I have attached the picture of my head on the GT 14 so I guess the second picture above (1/2 shroud) is correct??

Don't think the third picture (full shroud) will work because of the L shaped (generator ?) bracket sticking up. Also my bolts are recessed.

Not looking for original...just want to cool the heads correctly.

What say you?

You also need the side covers. Do you have them ? You can use the full shroud. Remove the head bolt that holds it. Install the shroud and put the bolt and bracket back on.

If you remove any head bolts be sure to loosen all of them and torque them in the proper sequence, otherwise the head gasket will probably need replacement soon afterwards.

I do have the left side shroud that goes around the blower and directs air up to the top piece. Are there more than that one and the top piece?

Yes, there two small pieces that go on either side.

I mark the head bolts with sharpie in proper sequences so I don't forget for next time.I think its important to tourque, some will disagree.

Me too... I also have printouts tacked on the wall of the shop for all the different engines...

A comment from my a-hole neighbor; "REAL mechanics don't use torque wrenches" --- I'm not kidding ,  yet, he is constantly coming over to raid my hardware stash every time he breaks a bolt putting stuff back together.

I have a paper template that will lay on top of the head while torqueing the bolts.

With the bolt recessed down on the head the second one on the 12 HP .That type was standard on 10,12 and14 HP Kolhers with the recessed bolts.
