What is this Wheel Horse?

I’d say that’s a steal but don’t take my word I don’t know much about any other tractor than the best model ever made being the rj in my opinion

So the guy offered to sell me.this one for $500...plus an additional engine and a rusty mower deck that looks pretty rough...is that a decent asking price?

Yes, that's a good price. Remember that you will need to find a belt guard for it to operate properly. :)

I think the Suburbans were vastly improved over RJs. Sure the RJ was simpler, but the Suburban (551) introduced the two-piece cased uni-drive. That design lasted 70+ years!

And you can actually steer a Suburban...

Thank-you.

Those of us who have been on the forum for a while have learned to keep our 'favorite' tractor thoughts to ourselves. Most of us own 40 year old tractors... some of use such as myself have 50-60 year old tractors... and it became apparent in the past on the forum that unnecessary and silly arguments can occur over 'what was the best tractor ever made.'

We ALL have the best tractors ever made... and if I never have an RJ in my possession... I won't feel less fortunate... :wh::teasing-whipyellow:

Or grey as in Work Horse. Or OD green or red oxide if you're Eb... :P Don has a black streak Ranger too.

My previous remark about the Suburbans being an "improvement" over the RJ was meant to reassure the new owner that the previous comments about RJs didn't mean the Suburbans were somehow less desirable. Like Don said, all of them are the best ever made, with very few models that weren't completely awesome.

Nice find !!!!

Agree it's a 1960 model 400

The choke knob was added because they didn't know how to connect the choke lever to the carb or the carb was changed. That hole in the hood the knob is in was for a 550 and the key for the electric start. Plugged on a 400 hood.

Since I went and picked it up this last weekend, I have found that the black knob is actually a kill switch.😃

Yes it is a 1961. A nice one too. I don't think Clintons made there way on to 61's but if there was one sitting on the shelf the Ponds would have used it. I like. :)

We think they did Bob. The 401 I give to Kev's girl has one. Good runner too. We thought maybe it was a budget 401 with no fenders or tool box. :confusion-shrug:

You should try for $450 since the rears are mounted backwards

If that is a two piece case on the tranny, it's a 1961 model 551. That was the only mid-engine Suburban made with that transmission. All others (including the 1961 model 401) had the 3-piece tranny with the side plates like the 58/59 RJs

Not sure about the Clinton. Primarily the 551 had the cast iron Lauson (Techumseh) 5.5hp.

This is actually the first one I bought. The second one I bought turned out to have a lot of issues that the previous owner basically lied about and wasn't at all what he claimed it to be so I ended up just selling it to someone else who was up for the challenge. I was so disgusted with the situation I didn't want to mess with it, so thankfully the guy that bought it was happy to give what I had paid for it so at least I got my money back.

Yes shoehorn is an excellent description but it was do able. The air filter housing is the biggest point of contention. But after some custom modifications I was able to still have an air filter housing that covers the filter from the elements. I may do a post showing in more detail how I made the swap but I'm sure I'll get flamed by the "purists" pretty hard but whatever. 🙂

Handy Don

Hat's off to the "pure" restorers, for sure, I am usually in awe of their dedication and expertise.

But kudos to anyone finding a way to keep a piece of good equipment viable for continued useful work or enjoyment.
