1962 Wheel horse 702? "maybe"

Recommended Posts

Hit Miss Man

I just purchased what I believe is a 1962 wheel horse 702. The serial number starts with a 62-. The Amp meter is between the throtle and choke cable. The push button starter is mounted below. It has a Kohler K161S engine that appears to be original. It has the square pan seat and a three spoke steering wheel. This is where i'm confused. If your sitting on the tractor the clutch / brake shaft on the right side that runs through the frame only extends out about 4 or so inches. It does not appear to have been cut off with a hacksaw or torch. It is smooth and some what beveled on the end. The person I got it had the book for a 1962 Wheel Horse Lawn Ranger 32R or 32E. ANY help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Yep, the manuals should be correct. '62 Lawn Ranger with an engine transplant.

Kinda looks like it has a nose ring with the padlocked front hitch. :D

Thanks guys for all the help I appreciate it. But my first question is why is the clutch brake pedal shaft so short on one side?. Does anybody have the main belt guard or the brake pulley guard for sale that I can purchase? I’m sure I need a few more parts also as I would like to bring this little tractor back to its original condition

I don't know why it is short but it is original. There is a tube that fits over it and shown in the ipl. Download the A-7136 file.

@dclarke Denny is the Lawn Ranger belt guard / brake guard tin the same as other round hoods from ‘61-64?  Just thinking of what models (Kohler engine) might help @Hit Miss Man’s quest…

I'm not sure, Kevin. Give me a few hours and I'll look up the part numbers in the manual section.

It has the later 8 HP style S/G belt guard, not from 1962. The 702 had a small bump-out dimple at the S/G, not the larger button shown. The model number under the K161S on the tag would be needed to ID the engine.

The small tires and the matching small rear fenders say its a Lawn Ranger, not a 702.

Is it me, or is the seat installed upside down???

Here are part numbers i came up with for belt guards, You can probably "search" any of these part numbers and find more info on them.
701-502-552-702 use a 4202 guard
'62 and '63 Ranger use a 4915 guard
633-653 and 753 use a 4450 guard with Kohler or a 4423 guard with Lawson
'64 Ranger-604 and 654 use a 4962 guard
704 uses a 4993 guard.
